Robert “Bob” Lewis Freeman passed away following a long illness on September 18, 2016 at the age of 84. Bob was born in Curtis, AR and attended Arkadelphia High School. Bob has lived in Metairie, LA since 1960.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Maureen Renee Ferrara (Vincent) and Michelle Yvonne Wichers (Paul); his granddaughters Elizabeth Ann Cooley-Brunet (Jared) and Nicole Suzanne Broussard (Zach); and his great-grandchildren Brooke Michelle Cooley, Victoria Gail Brunet, Kaylie Nicole Brunet, and Greyson Gerard Broussard. He is also survived by his brother Thomas M. Freeman and his sister Carolyn Freeman Jones (Sam), his step-grandchildren Dominick (Amy) and Tracy Ferrara, and Paul, Jennifer, and Michael Wichers, his step-great grandchildren Christopher and Katelyn Wichers and Luke Ferrara, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gail Elizabeth Himel Freeman; his parents Thomas Guy and Edna Smith Freeman, and his oldest sister Marjorie Freeman Manning.
Bob began his career in oil and gas in 1954 working on Texaco’s dock in Houma and quickly moved into oil field equipment sales. In 1974, Bob was the co-recipient of a United States Patent for a safety device that is still widely in use today. Bob was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (formerly known as American Institute of Mining Engineers) for 52 years and attained Legion of Honor Member status. He was also a founding member of the New Orleans Chapter of the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE) in 1978 and was instrumental in taking the organization national with over 5,000 members today. Bob was appointed the first AADE National Executive Director and was re-appointed by each President for 19 consecutive years. AADE appointed him Director Emeritus for Life in 1989 and Executive Director Emeritus in 2012 for his excellent leadership, advocacy, and devotion to the industry. He was a leading force in setting up partnerships with universities throughout the country to develop engineering curriculums and in obtaining funding to award scholarships to students wishing to pursue careers in the industry. Bob’s efforts during his tenure in the industry has touched thousands of people, earned him endless accolades, and gained him life-long friendships that he cherished. Bob was a true veteran of the oil patch. Bob’s fondest memories were of the countless hours he spent over the last 50 years organizing functions that were designed to promote camaraderie, technical knowledge, and excellence through all aspects of the industry.
In addition to his many oilfield memberships, Bob was also a Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks New Orleans Lodge #30. His membership spanned over 40 years. He held numerous positions within the organization and reigned as Captain of the Elks Krewe of Orleanians parade for many years. He was also involved in the formation of the Elks Krewe of Jeffersonians when Mardi Gras celebrations reached out to the suburbs in the early 1980’s.

Very few people in very little time, can impact others as Bob could. I'm a better person because I knew Bob. He was my friend. Ron Herbert ELK'S lodge 30

He was a pillar of the joint society community, especially SPE and AADE and his exuberance brightened every room! He helped create one of the first industry wide calendars for Smith International that was relied upon for decades prior to the advent of digital websites. God Speed, Bob!

It was my good fortune to have worked with Bob Freeman when Smith International acquired M-I Drilling Fluids in 1995. Bob was always there to help, mentor and support anyone who asked. May he now rest in peace with his beloved wife Gail.

Bobby, you and I were together for 76 years, 195 days, and I cannot imagine what my life will be like now; you won't ever be "gone" in that I will have the most wonderful memories any sister could have of a truly fantastic brother, but not a moment will pass, that I don't miss you and love you so much. Timer and I are going to be fine and one day, we will be those four Freeman kids all back together again!!! I love you so much.

Bob you are and always be a very special friend to me - when my husband died you told me "go back to work you need to stay busy". well he got me busy alright - he put me on all the New Orleans AADE committees that was back in 1997. We stayed friends for a very long time. I thank you for saving me from going into a deep depression. I will miss you my friend. Bob was a good friend and tireless worker for AADE. He was key in the decision to create a national organization and in every detail of expansion, attending organizational meetings at each new chapter. He mentored many and was a friend to so many of us. He was bright and at the center of the organization but his decisions were always without ego and based on what would be best for AADE now and going forward. Visionary, an oft overused word, described Bob Freeman.
We had a lot of laughs and good times together. He loved his family and was so devoted to them, especially Gail. I praise God that he is with her again, just as he wanted. He was my friend and I will miss him.

Bob was a loyal & professional oilfield salesman with a passion for the industry and its organizations, especially the AADE. He was my right hand when I was both AADE Chapter President in New Orleans and AADE National President. His dedication never ceased! He was committed to job excellence, insuring that both customer and supplier were treated fairly. I know that he is happy to be rejoined with Gail. Most of all, he was a great friend and confidant. He will be sorely missed and his efforts will never be matched! God bless and keep you, Bob!

I am heartbroken about the passing of this man, who I was blessed to work for and with for over 13 years. His service to the oilfield and benevolence to every one he came across was legendary. My heart felt condolences to his daughters and family that he adored. Rest in peace.

I promised you, a long time ago, that we would be together till the end, and thank our Heavenly Father, I was able to be with you and help you as much as I was able. You will always be my brother, my protector, and I shall always love you and miss you so very much. You will never be gone, to me, because you will always be in my heart. Thank you so much for letting me know that you are with "Mama", too, along with the love of your life, Gail. Your "baby Sister" will always remember you with nothing but love and wonderful memories.
