Robert Garcia Obituary
McALLEN - Robert John Garcia died June 22, 2008, in McAllen, Texas. His loving smile and character will always be profoundly missed by all his family and friends as he ascends to his new life in heaven where he will be anew with his father Dr. John Garcia who preceded him in death. He was born in McAllen to Dr. John & Sonia Garcia in August of 1959. Robert was a dedicated father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend as well as wonderful counsel to his many clients.
After graduating from McAllen High School Robert attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979. Upon his return to McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley Robert involved himself in the insurance and financial planning business and grew an impressive business with clients across the entire breadth of the Rio Grande Valley and the northeastern portion of Mexico. Robert himself was always prepared for his business meetings and was a professional par excellence. Robert could often be found on a tennis court teaching the game he relished to his children or just enjoying a game with friends. His four girls and one son also bicycled often with their dad. In countless ways all were blessed to have this good man as their dad.
He is survived by his wife Sonia Martinez de Garcia; his adoring children Sonia Priscilla, Roberto Andres, Maria del Pilar, Anasofia, and Valeria; by his mother Sonia Reyes de Garcia; and his brother Ricardo A. Garcia, sister-in-law Tari Scurlock Garcia & their children Lauren and Ricardo; as well as his numerous in laws: Eleuterio and Pilar Martinez, Gustavo and Silvia Morales, Cesar and Mallela Martinez, Jesus and Veronica Cantu, Jorge and Laura Martinez, Jesus and Marcela Martinez; Oscar and Brenda Martinez; and children.
Visitation will take place from 12 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Kreidler Funeral Home, 314 N. 10th Street, in McAllen with the Rosary commencing at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from 8:30 - 11 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the funeral Mass to immediately follow at 11a.m. Internment will take place thereafter at Roselawn Cemetery, 1201 S. Robert John Garcia was a gentleman, a scholar and a hero. He was a son, a brother and my father. I am proud to honor him with the life I choose to live each and every day. I do not offer my condolences. Instead I offer that he may live vicariously through me, his son. He was the best father I could have asked for, but I never asked. He just gave and gave and gave. His rope of life ran out. Mine never will, so that I may tie my ladder to Heaven and be with him in mind, body, soul, heart, and everything else just one more time. I am afraid father. I am also determined. I will make you proud. You have my word. I have yours. I look forward to seeing you again.

We had a great time sailing around the Virgin Islands. I remember something you told me in the mid 80’s, I would never forget…it was indicative of your true nature. I asked you why you hadn’t been dating and you said “I have been spending a lot of time with my dad”, I was perplexed, usually we tend to do our own thing in our 20’s, he responded,” I want to do things (sailing) with my dad while he’s young and we can still do the things we love to do.” “I’ll have time later for all of the other things. I learned of Robert's passing only today. I can hardly believe it is true. I knew him in high school and especially enjoyed being in the Development of Western Thought class with him. He had that great smile! He also had the knack, even then, to take life just seriously enough, without too much worry or concern. When I next ran into him about 6 months ago, even though we are both older and starting to turn gray, he still had that charming smile and warm personality. My sympathies go out to all of his family, especially his mother, wife and children. What a difficult time--I pray that Robert has found peace.

I first met Robert back in the 1960's when we were third graders at Victor Fields Elementary in McAllen Texas. We became fast friends. We used to ride our bikes together and we spend most of those summers playing and just goofing around.
I remember we would walk to the Palace movie theater in downtown McAllen. We watched a lot of movies there together. We saw Sean Connery in "You Only Live Twice." On the way home we pretended to be secret agents chasing the bad guys we saw in the movie. That was fun.
Today, when I see a box of Red Hots candies, I think of those times.
Sometimes after a movie we would stop by a local hobby shop and check out the model rockets. We launched quite a few out at the Victor Fields playground. That was fun and Robert made it memorable.
My family and I moved out of our old neighborhood in '69 and Robert and I ended up going to different junior highs, but I would always see him at tennis tournaments. Even back then, he was a pretty good tennis player.
Robert and I met up again in 9th grade at Lincoln Junior High and after we graduated from McHi ('77) I would see him on the UT campus. We went to a party together once. Robert was a lot of fun to be around.
These days I see most old friends at H.E.B. (my town square) and Robert was one of them. He would ask about my siblings and how I was doing, "Are you married yet? It's good for you." And he always asked about my mom. My mom always liked Robert. In fact, I think all of our moms liked Robert.
Recently, (about a year ago) I asked Robert how many kids he had and he replied, "Five." I told him, "Wow, Robert. You're a machine!" And he let out a big laugh and said, "You don't know what love is until you have kids." I will always remember that.
In many of my most cherished childhood memories, Robert was there. I will always remember the good times we had as kids and will miss him dearly as the years go by.

Robert was a close childhood friend and high school buddy. Ann and I send our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. I am currently on Navy Reserve duty in Okinawa, Japan or would be with you for Robert's services. I met Robert at the ACTS retreat in April 2008. I had only a couple of days with him but he seemed like a very kind-hearted person. I am saddened to hear of his loss. I also knew Dr. John Garcia . He was always very nice to me. God be with your family and bless all of you in this time of grief.
