HARTLEY
ROBERT HEINSOHN, II
Robert Heinsohn Hartley, II, 35, of Winter Park, FL, formerly of Sewickley, died June 8, 2005, after an eleven-week battle with brain cancer. He was the son of Thomas Kirby and Nell Tabor Hartley, and the brother of Margaret Britt Hartley of Sewickley. As a teen at Quaker Valley High School, Robert was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for Leadership and Service. Robert received the Crosby Scholarship at Rollins College and remained in Winter Park after his 1987 graduation. In high school and college, he distinguished himself through innovative journalism, political activism and leadership in local, state and national organizations. In 1986, he was one of 25 college students nationwide selected for the Leadership America summer program. After graduating from Rollins as a political science major, Robert worked for Darden Restaurants in the Govenment Relations Department. He remained committed to Rollins and delivered the Baccalaureate sermon for the Class of 1999. In 2001, he earned an MBA from Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins. Robert was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, community service, and daily witness to his Christian faith. He founded Hartley Photography, Inc., as a freshman at Rollins. He specialized in group and event photography and was among the few permitted to photograph President George W. Bush and his family. An Eagle Scout, Robert served as the Advancement Chair for the West Orange Boy Scout Committee. He also was a Commissioner for the Winter Park Housing Authority, an Associate Board member for the Orlando Science Center, a member of the Board of Directors for the Orange County Young Republicans and a member of Leadership Orlando, Class of 1993-94. In 1996, following successful treatment for a malignant brain tumor, Robert joined the Board of Directors for Walt Disney Memorial Cancer Institute at Florida Hospital and was instrumental in creating the cancer wing's Garden of Hope Chapel. He also supported the Healing Ministry at All Saints Episcopal Church, and various organizations and events devoted to cancer prevention and treatment, including the annual Celebrity Stroll. Robert is also survived by his wife of eight years, Barbara Brennan Hartley of Winter Park, FL. A Funeral Service will be held at 3 pm Tuesday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Winter Park. Private interment will be in Palm Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Hartley Fund at All Saints Episcopal Church or to the Walt Disney Cancer Institute of Florida Hospital, Orlando.

Dr. Hartley,

I only learned yesterday of the loss of your son. My sincere condolences to you and your family. You were my favorite teacher at Robert Morris while attending evening classes back in 1986. Reading about all the great accomplishments of your son has to be in part because of the influence of his parents. You are truly a remarkable woman and I hope you can find comfort in knowing how you have influenced many others in their lives. Sincerely, Camille Iacobucci

Barbara:

Your courage during the recent hospital stay and through the loss of Robert has truely inspired me. Robert was such a good and giving person that maybe he was called by God for a higher purpose. As you know, my thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family, as well as the Hartleys.

Love,

Jackie

Barbara,

There are puposes that you and Robert's family cannot perceive or comprehend. You may never understand - at least not in this life - but all of you must never let go of your faith. I am thinking of you lifting you in prayer. May the love of God, your family and your friends comfort you during the difficult days ahead.

I was saddened to hear of Robert's passing through the Rollins Alumni Association. As a proud member of the Class of '91, I remember Robert's "can do" attitude and "always on the scene" photographic presence. It was my privilege to know him and read of his continued dedication to the community.

Please accept my sincere sympathy and prayers. May God extend to you His sweet comfort and peace!

If life is to be measured not by the quantity of days, but by the quality of those days--then Robert's life is a shining example of life in all of its fullness for all to see. What a gift of a son, of a brother, of a husband, of a friend. Love and prayers to all, Emily

Your loss is such a sad one. As I read about Robert, I begin to understand what a wonderful young man he was. Why am I not surprised?

I was deeply saddened by the announcement of your son's death in Mary Beth's e-mail. I have thought of you so often since our reunion in October. Though I did not have the privilege of knowing Robert, I know he had to be a man of character and a delight to know because of his mother. I am praying that God's love and comfort will surround you and your family during this time and be your strength. Lovingly, Jane Womack Gibson

Dear Barbara; you both inspired me. Robert was so kind, took pictures for the Basket Brigade and even took the extra baskets to the Winter Park Housing Authority for their families. Because of his generosity to share, the legacy of helping these families through Basket Brigade will continue.

God Bless you and your family...Love your friend, Joetta

Dear Nell and Tom, what a ride Robert had during those 35 years! He crammed more vibrancy and energy into his inspired life than most people do in 70 plus. My thoughts and prayers are with you both, with Britt, and with Barbara. All who knew Robert were uplifted by his life and his many contributions to others. Thanks for bringing such a fine young man into this world.
