Robert Jarman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2025.
Robert D Jarman Jr of Salem, Connecticut passed away on February 25, 2025 at the age of 91. Robert was born in Newark, NJ on October 22, 1933 to Pauline (Giezey) and Robert D Jarman Sr. He grew up in Union, NJ where his baseball talent yielded major league tryouts, notably with the New York Yankees.

Bob enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean conflict with his friend Edward Stys and served on the USS Wasp and the USS Midway as a Radarman. He was awarded the China Defense Medal during his 1951-1955 service. Next Bob followed his father's lead in bread delivery and met his future wife Renee Wittevrongel. They married on October 20, 1956 and Bob applied his Navy radar skills when he joined the Union Township Police Department in 1960.

Bob and Renee grew their family with children Michelle (Horan), Diana (Reiter) and Robert. He enjoyed volunteering as a girls' basketball coach at St. Michael's School and as a bingo caller at the Boys' & Girls' Club. Bob's love of golf was present early on, and as children we could never talk about bad weather on a golf day. Bob and Renee were very outgoing and often hosted friends and family at their home for parties and picnics. Family vacations at the Jersey shore with his parents and Bob's young family were treasured.

Professionally, Bob rose to Detective and was awarded Policeman of Year in 1975 for solving a rape case across state lines. Bob's love of golf led them to Myrtle Beach, SC where they built a house and enjoyed the company of many friends and family members once retired. He enjoyed playing golf year-round and had 2 holes-in-one in 2001.

Bob selflessly cared for his beloved Renee for several years before she passed from dementia in 2018. He moved to Salem, CT later that year and started a new chapter. He found a new community in the Salem Seniors, a welcoming golf group, and volunteering at St John's Bingo. Bob loved living in his senior apartment, later requiring assistance for his dementia, including his dear friend Cheryl Welles who always watched out for him.

Bob's next chapter was Colebrook Village at Hebron EGIS Memory Care, embraced by a loving and compassionate staff led by Ebony. He also greatly valued his time with his companion Rose. The family are eternally grateful for the support provided by Colebrook staff, family and friends for the last seven months.

In addition to his children he leaves behind his beloved sister-in-law Lois Wittevrongel, son-in-law George Horan, daughter-in-law Tina Jarman, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew and many extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter (www.alz.org/ct).

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday March 19, 2025 at 10:15am at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 1212 Kelly Street, Union, NJ. Inurnment will take place on Wednesday April 9, 2025 at 10:30am at Hillcrest Cemetery, 1000 Highway 544, Conway, SC. Please proceed directly to the Open Air Chapel.
