Robert Maslow Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 4 to Nov. 7, 2007.
1941 - 2007
Robert Maslow, of Brooklyn, NY, died Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 of natural causes. He was 66. He is survived by his children, Susan, Peter, and Katy, and his sister Linda.

Robert Joel Maslow, son of Lewis and Elsie Maslow, nephew of Abraham Maslow, the psychologist, grew up in Brooklyn and Long Island, attended Goddard College in Vermont, studied at Cambridge in England, and received his PhD from the New School University in New York, NY. Around that time he met the mother of his three children, Pirkko Maslow née Turkki, a Finn living in the Lower East Side.

Robert was a professor of Political Science at Hofstra University, a political philosopher and writer, and an avid golfer. Despite having cerebral palsy, a lifelong physical handicap, Robert lived an active and intellectual life.

He was a longtime resident of the Midwood neighborhood in Brooklyn, and lived very close to his three children. He was a regular in many establishments and diners around Brooklyn and often debated politics with the locals. He had a great reputation and was well liked and respected in the community.

His family invites all who knew him to attend a public memorial service being held at Midwood Chapel, 1625 Coney Island Avenue (on the corner of Avenue M), Brooklyn, NY 11230 on Sunday, November 11th, 2007, from 12:00-2:00pm.

Thank you,

The Maslow Family

To die, to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to - 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause.

- William Shakespeare

I remember Bobby's great big smile when we were children, at all the seders and Thanksgivings in Woodmere Elsie organized for the family. We were buddies throughout the 60's, and I so regret how out of touch we became when I moved far away. I know his life was difficult, and hope he is in a more peaceful place or state of mind. In my experience, a relationship with a parent or other close person continues forever, and doesn't end with death. I so wish I could be at the memorial service, but health doesn't allow. Much love, Ellen Maslow

Dear Linda, Susan, Peter and Katy,

That was a lovely tribute written about your brother (and father). Thank your for sharing it. I was not aware of his accomplished background or his notoriety in the community. I am sure you are comforted to know he will no longer have to struggle and has a standing tee time at the golf course in the sky.

With sympathy,
Laurie
