Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 9 to Oct. 15, 2015.
STEWART
ROBERT FARRELL, Ph.D.
Age 78, died September 16, 2015, while in hospice care in Pompano Beach, FL. Son of Robert Harold Stewart, MD and Ruth Bryan Stewart, both deceased, and loving husband of Janet Trussell Stewart. He is survived by his wife, Janet; son, Robert Glendon Stewart; and daughter, Annamarie Stewart Cockreham; also survived by his sister, Ruth "Peach" Mullen of Mercer Island, WA. Born December 31, 1936, in Seattle, WA, Bob attended Lakeside Academy in Seattle, class of 1954 where he participated in football, wrestling, and track. He graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, MN in 1958 with a degree in chemistry. Robert earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. He did his post doctoral work at the University of Washington in Seattle before taking a professor of chemistry position at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, PA in 1965, and as a full professor of chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University from 1967 – 2005. Professor Stewart best known for his research in crystallography using x-ray diffraction enjoyed a long time fellowship with the Crystallography Department at the University of Pittsburgh. He also consulted at various times at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. It was at Carleton College that Bob met his wife, Janet Trussell. They were married in 1959 and recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. He and his family took sabbatical leaves in Perth, Australia (1971 – 1972), Groningen, Netherlands (1978 -1979), and Copenhagen, Denmark (1991). Bob loved the Danes and returned to Copenhagen many times after to collaborate with Professor Sine Larson and graduate students there. Professor Stewart retired in 2005 and he and his wife moved to Pompano Beach in 2015 to be close to their daughter Annamarie. He enjoyed gourmet food paired with fine wine and travelling, to visit both colleagues in Europe, Israel, and N. America. A Steelers fan, he loved football since his prep-school days. Bob never forgot his beloved childhood home of Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, and always celebrated Christmas with a fresh cut Douglas fir. A memorial will be held on December 21, 2015, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the John Knox Village auditorium in Pompano Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice by the Sea (www.hbts.org). Please contact Annamarie Cockreham at bobstewart [email protected] if interested in attending the memorial service.

Jan and family - Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Jan, you probably don't remember me. As a grad student, we appeared at your house with a case of beer once or twice to watch Monday Night Football with Bob. I'll bet you've received lots of notes from former students of Bob. And there's a very good reason for that - I know of no other Professor who had such a rapport with students. We all loved it when Bob would join us for happy hour at the pub on Craig St. where we inevitably ended up filling napkins with equations, integrals, etc. I used to tease Bob and say "Drinking and Deriving don't mix!". A truly beloved guy who will be missed!
