Robert Wade Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 16, 2021.

Robert Joseph Wade
January 22, 1945 - March 11, 2021

Bob was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1945. During his childhood he lived with his family in Chicago, Lombard, IL and Westfield, NJ.  He attended Jacksonville University, FL and graduated in 1969.  He served as a National Guard  Reserve Green Beret from 1967 to 1969.  After graduation  from college he married and moved to Clermont, FL.

At 25 years old, the youngest Ford dealer in the US, Bob built and operated Bob Wade Ford.  People in central Florida in the 1970's, 80's and 90's remember the catchy " Bob Wade Ford" television commercials with Jungle Bob, celebrity impersonations and white tiger cubs from Bob Baudy's Savage Kingdom. The dealership was popular  and successful for over 25 years. This was due, in large part to his unending customer service.

Very active in the Clermont community, Bob served as the President of the Rotary Club, and President of the Chamber of Commerce multiple times. Between 1987 and 2003 he was appointed to the 5th District Court of Appeals on the Judicial Nominating Committee.  Bob always looked forward to his dinner meetings  on the South Lake Hospital Board of Trustees, from 2000 to 2007. In all those years, he only missed one meeting, which was so typical of Bob; he was reliable, caring, dependable and never missed an opportunity to help someone he knew who was in need.

Bob farmed his citrus groves and grew watermelons. For a short time he owned the drive-in on the corner of highway 27 and 50, close to what is now the Clermont Oyster Bar. He loved to fish: he owned two charter fishing boats in Costa Rica which gave him another excuse to travel and fish. He owned and operated the old Florida Motel on Highway 27 and  the Stonebridge Campground and RV Resort in Maggie Valley North Carolina.

In recent years, as Clermont grew, he committed to spending 10 minutes talking to an "old timer" that he would bump into, catching up on old times, orange groves and how things have changed in South Lake.  He was a pioneer in "out of the box" thinking  creating inventions, developing shopping centers on sloping hills, building hotels: he had no limits.  He loved making a deal better than anything else, in any form. He was a master negotiator at Renninger's Market or in Europe or South Africa." If one is good, 5 is better" was his motto. He travelled the entire world, loved his family and friends and went to great lengths to make sure everyone was cared for. Bob will be missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Deborah Hyams Wade, stepdaughter Katherine Madison Guerin (Clay Guerin), stepson Christopher George Schubert, estranged children Jennifer Wade Smith and Clinton Robert Wade, his siblings Randi Wade Purchia (Michael James Purchia), Michael Steven Wade and Patricia Ann Fravel, and loving nieces Chelsie Marie Cooper (Matthew David Cooper), Megan Fravel Gunvaldsen (Frederick Charles Gunvaldsen), and Ashley Nicole Fravel.  Bob was predeceased by his parents Robert Joseph Wade and Dorothy Lou Wade.

A Celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date to be announced.

Bob always had the ability to treat everyone with respect regardless of their standing in the community. It was a gift that few have.

Debbie and family - condolences to you and all the family on Bob's recent passing. I met him through Ann Dupee and the Chamber of Commerce when first coming to Clermont in 2004. He was surely one of the movers and shakers in the community and I was glad he still had a place in his heart for the Chamber that he served for so many years. I also loved the home on Lakeshore Drive and admired the many furnishings and artwork he collected from around the world and the stories he could tell about them all. I still have the stag's horn fern hanging in the yard that he gave me a number of years ago. I will always think of him when I care for it. Peace and blessings on Bob and all the family.

I met Bob at Clermont city Council meetings over 20 years ago. He loved to propose deals, and some of them were truly wonderful. He was a gentleman among gentlemen. Any time i would run into him in town he ALWAYS had time to chat and we would catch up on what each other had been doing with our family and friends. The last time I saw Bob was at the grocery store in early February. I loved to hear about the places he had visited. Yep he made money....but he made the best of it by seeing the world. I will truly miss his smile and friendly personality. He will be missed by this community. Prayers to his family and friends. RIP Bob.

I met Bob through my friends Gary and Sheila when they used to work for Bob at the Florida Motel. I remember Sheila used to keep candy on the counter for the hotel guest and Bob would always grab a handful when no one was looking! I'm glad I had the pleasure of Knowing him. He had a great heart and was always there if you needed him. He was there when Gary passed away and made sure Sheila was ok. May you rest in peace Bob and say hi to Gary for me.

When I first started working at the Holiday Inn Express I was never told about "Bob Wade". Mostly because he was a silent partner. He was at the hotel everyday checking how things were going during the build but we never talked. I thought he worked for the construction company. People would would come in and talk about Bob Wade and I that he owned the hotel. I would say "Bob Wade who?" I finally asked the other owner who he was. Yes, he was an owner. I was embarrassed and apologized to him and we became good friends. I enjoyed working with Bob and he was a wonderful employer, teacher, tour guide, consultant, and most of all a great friend.
I will always remember he would make daily stops at the Fairfield Inn and Suites and get a USA Today paper and at least a dozen fresh baked cookies. ( he said he was taking them to the nursing home for his Mother. I knew who would be eating the majority of them.) I miss his visits and his smiling face.
Bob thank you for the car and Angel the cockatoo.
You may be gone but will never be forgotten.
May you rest in peace my friend.
Deb my heart goes out to you and Katie.

RIP Bob...I will miss you! You were the best boss I ever had. You were more like family to Gary and I. I always called you my Uncle Bob. Remembering times that people gave me a hard time at the Motel and wanted to talk to the owner. I would say let me call my Uncle Bob! They would say oh never mind! Then I would let you know and you always laughed. We had alot of good times with you and Deb. Give Gary a big hug for me Bob. Until we meet again...I love you Uncle Bob♥
