Roderick Green Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2008.
GREEN _ Roderick Wallace January 30, 1955 - September 30, 2008 Rod (Rodley) died peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the age of 53 years, with his sister and friends at his side. He met his last challenge with immense dignity and courage. Rod was born in Calgary on January 30, 1955 and he left Alberta only briefly to live in BC. Rod's interests were many, and he was always ready for something new, including hot air ballooning at the 1988 Winter Olympics and bungee jumping in BC. A seasoned traveler and member of Hostelling International, Rod journeyed to many parts of the world by plane, truck and boat. His last trips included Hawaii with cousins, Las Vegas with a friend, Tofino with his sister, and Denver, Colorado, all in the past ten months. Rod loved to meet new people on his travels and always had a story for the rest of us after he returned. As a graduate of SAIT's Business Administration program, Rod worked many years in the Calgary oil patch. He worked for McGinnis Rat Hole for twenty years and retired from Mullen Group a couple of years later. As a long-time member of the Bum Biters Ski Club, and before that the Petroleum Ski Club, Rod spent many weekends skiing with his friends. When he was not skiing, he was bicycling, motorcycling, hiking, scuba diving, golfing, playing pool or travelling. Rod volunteered for many groups and events including the Nickelodeon Folk Club, the Calgary Folk Festival, various blues festivals, and his favourite radio station, CKUA. Rod is survived by his father Ulric (Rick) Green; sister Joanne Green and brother-in-law Wayne Williamson; nieces, Erin Green (son Marcel) and Julie Green (partner Leland Guillemin); Uncle Leavert Johnson; Aunt Marion Hare; and numerous cousins all over Canada. Rod was predeceased by his mother Helen Green in 2006 and sister Shelagh Maureen in 1975. At Rod's request, no formal Service will be held. Instead, a gathering of his friends will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at a time and location to be announced. A "come & go" gathering for family and family friends will also be held at the Scenic Acres Retirement Lodge (150 Scotia Landing N.W.) on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society), Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 8M7 (Telephone 403-295-1811, www.stars.ca ) or to the charity of donor's choice. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Nichol, palliative home care nurses, Irene Pierce and Jo Brooks, and the staff of Unit 47 at the Foothills. Most of all, we thank Rod's many friends who made his last journey the best it could be. You were truly amazing. In living memory of Rod Green, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH. Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Hey Rodley:

You are missed and we are very sad and I know you are in a better place now! You had such a funny and dry sense of humour we could all relate to! I'll never forget our get together's and it was an honour to know you!

Hi Rodley. Miss your sense of humour the most and that look you give me when I say something silly. We will be skiing, scuba diving and riding our motorcycles together again one day my friend. Tony and I appreciate the time we spent together over the years and our sympathies and thoughts are with his dear sister Joanne.

Dear Joanne:
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. We remember Rod as a caring and thoughtful guy who was always looking to lend a hand where it was needed and we were very lucky to have him as a friend and member of our ski club for the last decade.
Gone from us but not forgotten ... Godspeed Rod!

Dear Mr. Green, Joanne and Family.

So very sorry to learn today of Rod's passing. I have very fond memories of growing up with you as next-door neighbours.

I wish it had been possible to have been there with you this afternoon to express our heartfelt sympathy in person. We were all very touched that Rod and Mr. Green came to Dad's memorial service last September. I only wish we had had the chance to talk then as we did with all of you at Mrs. Green's service. As you may know, Mom has dementia and if she knew of Rod's passing she would also want to express her condolences to all of you. And I know that Carol will be very sad to hear the news about Rod when she returns from vacation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this very sad time.

Fond Regards,
Lynne (Lawrence) Crowder

Our sincere condolences and sympathy to Rod's family and friends. He was a true gentleman and a very interesting and intelligent friend. Rod's outlook on life and on death was testament to his strength and character. One of our fondest memories was working with him to erect a fence around the back yard where he lived. In typical "Rodley" fashion, he said he knew nothing about building a fence, but that fence will likely be standing long after we are gone. We have all lost "a good one". With respect and sympathy, Klaas Craats and Judy Nodland
