Dr. Roger Warren McIntire
Born in Auburn, NY, on September 20, 1935,
Roger Warren McIntire died peacefully at his home in
Columbia, MD on November 23, 2024, at age 89.
He spent his life as a strong advocate for better parenting of children and teenagers through his work as a psychology professor at the University of Maryland, therapist, consultant to school systems and institutions, author, and father. He also led parent and teacher counseling programs that focused on common problems of families, children, and teenagers.
He authored several books including For Love of Children: Behavioral Psychology for Parents; Losing Control of Your Teenager; Teenagers and Parents: 10 Steps for a Better Relationship, and numerous others.
Professor McIntire graduated from Northwestern University and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Louisiana State University in 1962. During the Vietnam War, Dr. McIntire managed a grant from the U.S. Army to train canines for sniper reconnaissance in Vietnam. Because of these working dogs, many soldiers returned from Vietnam alive.
He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement from the University of Maryland in 1996, after 32 years. He was a long-time member of the Association for Behavior Analysis International, where he presented many papers; the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies; and the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis. In 2001, the society presented him with its award for "Effective Presentation of Behavior Analysis in the Mass Media." He was also a long-time member of the College Park Behavior Group. On one sabbatical, he spent six months teaching at University College in Cardiff, Wales.
He co-authored many columns entitled "Strategies" in T.E.A.M. (The Early Adolescent Magazine). His parenting column appeared in the Martinsburg (West Virginia) Journal for several years.
Rog had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid soccer fan, coach, player, and referee. He loved to fly planes and enjoyed many hours as a private pilot flying friends and family in his Cessna 172. He also enjoyed sailing, scuba diving, and traveling. He toured the world with his wife Eileen, visiting Morocco, Gibraltar, Italy, Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, and the Galapagos, among other countries. He was a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Eileen (Haavik) McIntire; four daughters, Pam McIntire (spouse Greg Townsend), Jennifer Madden (spouse Chris), Donna Byrd (spouse Lewis), and Lorien (Davis) Haavik; two grandsons, Duncan Townsend and Damon McIntire (spouse Caroline Balling); his sister-in-law Carrol McIntire; his nephews Chris McIntire (spouse Ellie), Brent McIntire, and Todd McIntire (spouse Susan); and his niece Lisa Shaw (spouse Lynn). He was predeceased by his first wife, Caroline Fowler McIntire; his brother, Clifton McIntire Jr.; and his parents, Clifton McIntire and Ellen (Weiler) McIntire.
Throughout his life, Roger put his scientific understanding and his love and kindness in action on behalf of children, families, and the larger community. May his legacy continue to take root and bring forth love, tolerance, and understanding.
