Rudy Castellanos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2017.
Rudy Castellanos, a native San Franciscan passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 2, 2017. Born in Oaxaca Mexico March 3, 1922, Rudy came to San Francisco at the age of two with his Mother and sister and settled in at 129 Liberty St. in the Mission District. Rudy made a name for himself as a talented baseball and outstanding hitter and became his future son's personal hitting coach. Rudy played for many of the semi pro Baseball clubs popular throughout California during the 20's – 60's including Theisen Glass and The Harold's Club. At the age of 20, Rudy enlisted in the Army where he participated in the North Africa and Italian campaigns before catching a serious case of Malaria, spending several months in the hospital before returning to his unit. After three years in Europe Rudy returned to the city he loved and eventually met the love of his life and the woman who would be by his side for 72 years up to the day of his passing. Alma and Rudy moved to South San Francisco to raise their four children and Rudy embarked in the career he loved as a professional teamster becoming a proud Union Member of Local 85. Rudy's love of sports rubbed off on his three sons as Alma and Rudy cheered from the stands for years to come. Rudy's love for the Giants and 49ers was only second to his love of golf which he played until the age of 75 with an eight handicap and seven recorded hole in ones. Rudy and Alma's love for each other was tested throughout the years with life's challenges but that love never wavered. Their home was the gathering place for all celebrations that brought the family together for all holidays and impromptu parties. All those who walked through their front door were greeted with Rudy's infectious smiley and a drink request. Rudy is survived by his wife Alma; sons: John and Rudy (Annie); daughter Cassandra; grandsons: Russell, David, Jason, Johnny & Tony; granddaughters: Lisa & Raquel; 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. His son Bruce (Rip) and grandson Jesse preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the caregivers and hospice nurse that cared for Rudy with so much compassion and love, we will never forget. A celebration of Rudy's life will take place at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's Funeral Home in San Mateo, CA on June 17, 2017 at 1pm.

I always enjoyed seeing Rudy. He was always friendly and such a warmhearted person especially with the kids who were fortunate enough to get the experience of a ride in his train. Just a great guy who will be missed.
