Samuel Henry Holmes

Samuel Henry Holmes CHARLESTON - Samuel "Sammie" Henry Holmes passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2022 at the age of 101 surrounded by his loving children. Samuel was born on March 6, 1921 in Charleston, SC to the late William Holmes and Mary Jackson). On September 8, 1942, Samuel married the love of his life, Dorothy Clement. The two spent 61 years together and raised three wonderful children. Samuel was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 2003. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Mary Louise, and brother, Charles. Samuel enjoyed a career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in the sheet metal shop. After retirement, he began volunteering with Catholic Charities, "Echo House", helping the ladies and men of the Immaculate Conception Alumni Association. His foremost passion was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. He had a great talent for woodworking and a creativity for turning clothespins into crucifixes. Samuel was the rock everyone turned to in both happy times and in times of need. Everyone who knew him fondly remembers his infectious smile and his favorite catchphrase, "Fine as Wine". He is survived and mourned by his children, Ronald (Mary); Sophronia and Carleater, his granddaughters, Chanequa and TaNisha, great grandsons, DaQuan, Charles, and Nicholas, his numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who are grateful for his presence in their lives. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Sunday, October 23, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at Fielding Home for Funerals, 122 Logan Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Samuel's Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 24, at Morris Brown AME Church, 13 Morris Street, Charleston, SC, 29403 at 11:00 A.M. Viewing will be on Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery 2280 Spruill Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405. If the measure of a life is what you leave behind rather than what you take from this earth, then Samuel's was a life well live.
