Sandra Hopkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2025.
Tallahassee - Sandra "Sandy" (Dixon) Hopkins, born on August 9, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Robert T. and Elizabeth M. Dixon (VanNatta), passed away at age 73, March 7, 2025, in Tallahassee, Florida. She graduated from Manatee High School (Bradenton, FL) in 1969. Sandy worked as a computer programmer for Florida State University for over 31 years, she retired in 2012. Sandy obtained a Bachelor's in Science (Public Administration) in 2001 (1981-2001). Sandy was married to Richard Glenn "Glenn" Hopkins. Sandy had a lifelong love of music. She and Glenn made music together with their rock and roll band, Wreckin' So. She played bass guitar, and they played with some of Tallahassee's finest musicians. She would walk through the crowds engaging with fans while checking the band's sound. Her playing bass guitar in public encouraged many young girls to follow their dreams in music. She and Glenn also played as an acoustic duo at community events and festivals. She loved having flowers and solar lights around the house and yard. Sandy got along with everyone. Everyone knew her as a sweet, funny, generous and loving friend. After a short time, people would tell her their life story as if they had known her all their lives. Sandra was preceded in death by her brother, Robert A. Dixon. Sandra is survived by her husband Glenn; her daughter, Jennifer Alexander; her granddaughters, Rachael Davis and Daphne Davis; her brother Edward P. Dixon (Kelly) and nieces and nephew; and brother-in-law Stephen M. Hopkins. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a wonderful person, partner and friend. She will be Glenn's sweetheart forever. The family invites donations in Sandra's name to the Wakulla Animal Shelter, 1 Oak Street, Crawfordville, Florida 32327.

I miss you, Sandy! I enjoyed all the time we all spent together especially when you and Glen would make time to visit with us whenever you two came to B-town. We had lots of never ending laughs. Play some music in Heaven.

My sweet Sandy, when you told me there were complications from your surgery and you were still in the ICU... that it would be our last conversation.

It was because of your encouragement that I started painting again. You impacted my life in so many positive ways. You was even there when I jumped out of the airplane.

My heart hurts and the world is darker because you aren't here to shine your bright light. Give Floyd & my furbabies a hug and kiss from me. Until I see you again...I Wreckin' Heaven is shining even brighter since you arrived. I love you and thank you for sharing your love with me!

Retta Matthews!

Part 3 of another band memory I have. A lot of times, people would come up to us and say, "My husband dragged me out tonight. I didn't want to come. But while I was sitting with my back to the band, I thought to myself, "'Hey...they are good!' I found myself tapping my foot to a favorite song. I turned around expecting to see an all-male band. What!? Do my eyes deceive me? That's a woman playing the bass guitar! Turned around again. That's a woman playing those drums! I could no longer help myself and found myself wanting to get up and dance. Then, later, enjoying a good meal. We had so much fun and I am so glad my husband made me come out tonight. Thank you for blessing us with your talents!" Hearing that was music to our ears! We enjoyed making people happy.

This is part 2 of another memory I have of Sandy. As the "Wreckin' So" band, we performed at Smitty's Cow Chip Jam in Tallahassee. It was advertised on radio and television. We were performing under a pavillion where the BBC (Bradfordville Blues Club) was. While we were rocking out with our first number, bees starting zooming all around chasing Sandy and Glenn. Since I was the drummer, thank goodness they didn't go after me because I couldn't have been able to get up and run. Glenn managed to sing the lyrics but then had to run. Poor Sandy and Glenn were running back and forth all over the stage and managed to get away from them. Thank goodness the bees quieted down and Glenn said, "Those bees know where the rock 'n roll is coming from and they are going for it, too! Wreckin' So?" And, the audience responded, "Wreckin' So!" Then, in the middle of one song, we started experiencing equipment issues. Glenn informed me and Sandy to just keep the beat going on drums and bass guitar while Glenn was trying to fix the problem. Sandy and I kept it going and thank goodness, Glenn got the problem fixed and we all managed to finish the song together. He was real proud of us hanging in there and keeping it all going no matter what! Crazy good times!

Being the first drummer for 6 years for the "Wreckin' So" band, I'm in shock over Sandy's passing. We played mainly in Tallahassee, Gadsden County and Longboat Key in Sarasota. When we performed, that was our catch-phrase, "Ready to rock 'n roll?"(and the audience would respond), "Wreckin' So!" spelled that way as a little play on words. We were not only a band but became friends and actually, more like a family. I enjoyed many a delicious meal, watching a funny movie, playing music with them on their beautiful property in the country. I had a blast! We had a good rapport with each other and the audience. Co-workers would come to our gigs and Sandy would generously provide them with a tray of food or their favorite drink. They would report back to me how much fun they had. We were considered the nicest band in Tallahassee. Sandy had an opportunity to go back stage and meet the famous Emmie Lou Harris at one of her concerts. Right off, Sandy told her she named her cat after her! Sandy loved her pets. I'm sure everyone remembers the Doberman dog, "Tara...the terror" we would jokingly say! Eventually, I went a different route playing at churches, church concerts and other bands. After not seeing each other for some time, my husband and I stopped in at the "Salty Dawg Restaurant" in Tallahassee and Sandy and Glenn were performing. Sandy said over the microphone, "Look Glenn...it's Ellen! Only the best girl drummer in all of Tallahassee" which I really appreciated. I was happy to hear that she and Glenn got to open for the famous Rick Derringer at the Moon in Tallahassee. She and I as female musicians took some garbage from people over the years. She and I would share "war stories" of what we've been through as musicians. It's not easy being a female musician but what a blast we have had! It's a God-given talent. She did very well playing bass guitar and could really hold her own. She could do a little back-up singing as well. We ran into Sandy and Glenn at Outz Restaurant in Newport, FL and she asked if I would be willing to play with them as a brief "Wreckin' So" reunion of sorts for her birthday. I agreed. We played and still had it going on because we brought the house down! Good times! I brought all our grandkids and 2 of our 3 daughters with us. Sandy, being the kind, generous person she was, bought all of our seafood dinners because she was so touched that we were there for her birthday playing music and having fun! She mentioned she was so happy for me with such a wonderful husband and family. In the past, she knows what I have been through. She and I would text each other from time to time and the last time I heard from her was January sharing photos and videos of the snow. Glenn, Jenny and grandkids...I'm so very sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers. Glenn...like the song we played, she will be your forever, "Cinnamon Girl!" If you can, contact me at [email protected].

In Loving Memory of Sandy Hopkins

Sandy was one of the first to welcome us into our neighborhood, but more than that, she welcomed us into her heart. She cared deeply for our family and I will always cherish the kindness and warmth she showed us.

We always wished for more time-to sit, talk, and catch up-but every conversation we shared was a gift. Her love for Glen, her daughter Jenny, and her granddaughters Rachel and Daphne was evident in the way she spoke of them so often and with such pride. And oh, how her face would light up when she talked about music! She was always ready to invite us to their next gig, sharing her joy so freely. Her favorites to wear was a tie dye t-shirt and matching hair scrunchy. We always think of you when see this, and will continue to do so!

Sandy, you were loved by us all. I hope to see you again one day. Until then, we will hold your memory close, grateful for the time we had with you.
Love, Kevin, Jeanna, Kelsey, Jacob, Evelynn, Lydia, and Elise
