Saul Cohen Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune from Mar. 29 to Apr. 3, 2016.
Saul "Solo" Cohen, 88, died peacefully in his Arizona home, surrounded by loved ones. Cherished son of the late Leopold and Lulu (née Glass); treasured husband of Carol (née Natenberg); loving brother of the late Muriel "Mimi" (Paul) Francis; adoring father of the late Barbara Cohen and the late Nancy Korek; doting Papa of Bettina Korek; beloved grandpa of Rachel, Ben, Jami, Marli, and Elaine Gitles; dear stepfather of David, Jay, and Paula Gitles, Sharon (Dan) Uslan, and the late Alan (Karen) Gitles. He will also be missed by Mandy Amedo. Saul was the retired chairman of Leeco Steel, a company founded by his grandfather in 1880. Under his direction, Leeco became an industry leader in the fabrication and distribution of steel plate. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and attended St. John's Military Academy during WWII. He joined the Army in 1945 and was shipped to Japan. The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima while he was on board going overseas. After military service, he attended the University of Illinois until his father became ill. Saul then returned to Chicago to run the business until he retired in 1997. Saul had a love of life as shown by how he spent time away from the office with Carol. Fishing was a 50+ year hobby, including many trips fly fishing in Alaska. His love of golf and travel brought great pleasure to both of them. Many years were spent devoted to charity, particularly the Jewish United Fund. Giving of himself was part of his DNA. Saul's granddaughter Bettina Korek says that Papa was not only an incomparable grandfather, but an adviser and friend. To quote his partner and brother in law, Paul Francis, "if you got to know Saul, you didn't really need to know anyone else." Funeral service Sunday, 11 AM, at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette. Interment Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish United Fund of Chicago, www.juf.org, or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St, Phoenix AZ 85014. For info: 847-256-5700.

My heart goes out to all the loved ones who had to experience the loss of such a loved one. Having a loved one fall asleep in death is a difficult thing for a family to go through. May you find comfort in your memories with him and may you find peace of heart in prayer to Our loving heavenly Father .
