This Canadian was mesmerized by the way in which Dr. Foote communicated the events of the Civil War resulting in fostering a life-long serious interest in American history. He made the Civil War and indeed history come alive making one truly believe that he or she was in the very period he was communicating about.

NEVER KNEW OR EVEN HEARD OF SHELBY FOOTE UNTIL I WATCHED THE KEN BURNS CIVIL WAR SERIES. SHELBY WAS ONE SMART MAN!! JUST BY THE WAY HE TALKED, YOU COULD TELL HOW SMART HE WAS. I HAD NO IDEA HE PASSED EITHER UNTIL A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME. DID NOT BELIEVE HIM, WENT ONLINE TO LOOK IT UP, AND SAW THE LINK FOR THIS SITE. SAD TO HEAR HE PASSED, PROBABLY WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. HOW DID HE PASS, NOTHING WAS MENTIONED ABOUT IT. SO SORRY TO HEAR SHELBY PASSED!!!

I'm watching a tribute to Ken Burns on PBS, tonight. A number of clips of Mr. Foote were featured, and once again, he was as wonderful as he was back in 1990. Thank you, Mr. Foote, for your incredible knowledge, and your ability to share it in such a unique way. We are all the better for it. You are missed.

Enjoyed his PBS Special on the Civil War. His voice is one of those you can recall in an instant, and one that drew your interest fully.
A true southerner. I had a professor Arra L. Lambert of Boaz, Ala. who introduced Foote's writings to me and spoke highly of him.

He seemed like such a wonderful person. He was my favorite historian. I can't think of the Civil War without Mr. Fooote coming to mind. His homespun intellectualism and delivery brought me new levels of understanding. I fear the world is a lesser place without him.

I, too am saddened to hear of his passing, although not surprised. I have encountered him in Ken Burns Civil War, and I have found him to be a delightful speaker as well as a knowledgeable historian. I am truly sorry to hear of his passing. I really enjoyed reading his three books on Civil War "A Narrative." I would have loved to have met him. Sadly I did not become familiar with him until the rerun of "The Civil War" on PBS. I searched the internet to find out what books he had written and was heart broken to discover that he had died. I would have considered it an honor to meet him. I am, however, looking forward to reading his books. He impressed me as being very honest and sincere in his views and a true Southern Gentleman.

After reading "The Civil War - A Narrative" I wrote a letter to Mr. Foote thanking him for making the totality of the War so clear. I was surprised and honored to receive a reply from Mr. Foote, written in conversational tone thanking me for my letter. His reply is kept with my important papers and a copy of it is in the flyleaf of my copy of Volume I. He was a marvelous example of the true Southern Gentleman.

I knew Shelby's son "Huggy" as a young boy in Memphis on Roberta Drive. He lived in a castle-like house down the street from ours. I went to see him one day and was cornered by his huge white German Sheppard dog. I stood there for about an hour before my Mom came to get me. Later in life I found out who his father was. I have appreciated his works over the years. I wish I would have met him. If you are reading these... hey Huggy! It's been a long time. Good job on your book "My Friend from Memphis". I was sorry to hear about your Dad. He was a great man.

Shelby Foote's works should be mandatory high school text. The insight, compassion, and love of people and their words is a powerful legacy for North and South alike. You do not have to be a Southerner to feel apart of this man's family, the Nation of the United States.
I pray that we will see the horrors of war for what they are and treasure peace and unity that so many men and women died for.
Shelby Foote is our National Treasure.

As Shelby sometimes quoted Keats regarding fact-based writing, "A fact is not a truth until you love it". The prosaic style of his works brought truth and humanity to the facts, and allowed us all to share the magic. Thank you, Mr. Foote.

I recently met Huger Foote, the son of Mr. Shelby Foote. To be honest before I met Huger, I had no clue who Shleby was, but as my friendship with Huger got stronger, I learned more and more about this extraordinary man that he called "Father." I was at the Historians house earlier this day. I was givin a sort of tour, and was able to stand inside his room. The room where this man had written so many awesome books. The desk where he sat for hours on end writing. His presence still lingered. I wish I would have getten the chance to meet him, but I am glad I had th opporitunity to meet my second hero. His son.

Growing up in Memphis and being a "Southerner" at heart, despite being transplanted to California, I highly respect and appreciate Mr. Foote and the richness and texture of his writing.
His loss dims our understanding and our light that illuminated a complex subject often viewed historically out of context in terms of only the present day. Truly, his death overshadows our pathway.
Fortunately his valuable words are left behind for our continued profit and example.
Thank you, SIR!

Even though it's been over a year since Mr. Foote passed away, the Foote family is in my prayers. To many thousands of Americans, Mr. Foote was known as the face of the Civil War, but I'm sure his family knew him simply as a husband, father, etc. In any event, Mr. Foote's participation in Ken Burns' THE CIVIL WAR sparked an interest in me for our country's most important struggle. I was recently able to purchase the three volumes of Mr. Foote's THE CIVIL WAR: A NARRATIVE, and I am finally reading them. What a joy and legacy! Also, thanks to Mr. Foote's inspiration, I recently paid a visit to several Civil War battlefields, including Vicksburg. Rest in peace, Mr. Foote.

Goodbye to a great one. As a teacher of American history-I feel I owe a debt of gratitude to Shelby Foote. Among a cast of characters-it was Shelby Foote and his seemingly limitless cache of stories that most entertained and intrigued viewers of Ken Burns' "Civil War." With a soft drawl and a smirk, Shelby Foote brought the drama of the American Civil War into the late 20th and 21st century. Thank you Shelby Foote.

Hi everyone. We were in the middle of our gold rush in Australia whilst you guys were having your Civil War. I've always admired Walker Percy. I've learned to admire Shelby Foote. His writings have been the center of so many of my friends' conversations through the years. Last weekend I was thinking about never having met Mr. Percy and decided I would make a point of meeting and talking to Mr. Foote before he was gone. Words cannot express the sadness I feel at our loss of Shelby Foote. He contributed so much to people everywhere, but he is especially beloved to the sons and daughters of the South.
To me, he represented all that is good about Dixie. His velvety Southern drawl was like a soothing balm for the soul. Shelby, the scholar, will be sorely missed, but no more so than Shelby, the Southern gentleman, with the courtly manners reminiscent of the grand Old South of a different era.
My most heartfelt condolences to the widow and family of Mr. Shelby Foote.

My condolences to his family. Mr Foote's narrative on the "Civil War" series literally turned on entire generations to the War and American History as a whole.
If not for him, I would not have tried to learn more about the war and our country. His gentlemanly approach to explaining the circumstances and insite into the people of the era made that war seem real and not just some war fought over 100 years ago.
He should be regarded as a true American Literary Icon and remembered as a world class gentleman. My thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family.

I had the great privilege to meet, shake hands, and speak with Mr. Foote in 1995 when he came to Washington and Lee University.
When I told him I was an Appomattox Native, he kept the Professor waiting while he talked with me about Appomattox.
His demeanor in person, like that displayed on Ken Burn's series, was that of a true Southern Gentleman and learned Historian. I shall always treasure that conversation, and his books (which he signed for me), but more importantly the lessons he taught us.

As a native Californian with Southern roots, I found myself rivited to our television set fifteen years ago to catch glimpses and sound-bites of Mr. Shelby Foote during the presentation of Ken Burns' monumental epic, "THE CIVIL WAR."
Such a quiet understated authority in all that he said. He truly knew what he was about. My one regret is that I never had the opportunity to meet the man and offer my thanks for that twenty-year labor of love of country and of the men who fought and made the supreme sacrifice in (as Mr. Foote said) "That great catastrophe that we call the Civil War."
Now, he too has crossed the river and is, no doubt, comparing notes with Stonewall Jackson, James Ewell Brown Stuart, George Pickett and General Lee.
Rest easy, Sir. God Bless and keep you and your family as well.

Mr. Foote was the highlight of the "Civil War" series, for me. His measured delivery, and homespun character belied a fierce intellect and passion for his field. For a northerner watching and hearing Mr. Foote, he put a real face and feeling of a southern point of view, and made me cry. He was unequaled in his knowledge of the war, and his ability to spark the love of research for future generations. My condolences to Mr. Foote's family. You will be missed, Mr. Shelby Foote.

Shelby Foote made the American Civil War totally real and not just another boring war from the ancient past.He could give such anecdotes about people and incidents as if he'd been there.I'm not American but he made the Civil War, for me, more interesting than my own country's history.I'll certainly miss his lovely slow accent and his riviting stories.God Bless Him.

Although like most who are signing this Guest Book, I never had the honor of shaking the hand of Shelby Foote but his easy style of speaking and writing made everyone feel as if they knew him. As a native Southerner he always presented a positive side to those whose primary interest in history is to express politically correct propoganda rather than telling the history of the South the way it "really" was. Even without speaking he always put a face of truth, heritage and honor on all things Southern and the flag that represents it.

Shelby, where ever you are,
You were not a man whose passing we need mourn with great sadness. Sadness is an emotion reserved for those who pass on prematurely or for those who leave behind no legacy or memorable accomplishments. Certainly none of that applies to you, a man who was one of our most celebrated researchers and prolific writers of events that happened between 1861 and 1865. Constant reminders of your presence in my home are the spaces on my bookshelf filled with your work.

Shelby Foote could have been just some random author in my life, but thanks to my greatest teacher Mrs. Norma Taylor and her introduction to Shelby's books, I found that he was more of a guide understanding the past, bringing it to life, and inturn bringing my heritage to life. He expanded my love of history and I thank him dearly for that. It was with a sad heart that I read of his passing yesterday. Our thoughts are with his widow.

It is with great sadness that I read of the passing of this icon of American Historical Literature. As a student of American History and a Civil War reenactor, I always felt as though those of us in the hobby had a true friend in Mr. Foote. It was because of the ground work laid by him and other writers that allowed me to pursue the writing of my own work of historical fiction. The world is a bit darker now that this literary torch has been extinguished. He will be greatly missed.
