Thinking of Shelley after all these years. I remember celebrating Hanukkah with Shelley's latkes at her apartment in New York City. I left the Actors Studio after the birth of my 3rd child. I'd call and tell her I joined La Leche and that I was breast feeding over a year! She remarked,"Boy, you must really like it!" and "You're lucky you have a husband who loves you." Even though I yearned to get back to the Studio to study with her again. It was not to be. Instead my husband and I joined the Chabad community and Shabbos became more important. However, I will always remember Shelley as an extraordinary human being, a brilliant and insightful teacher.

For Shelly...
To this very day you
are remembered.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To the Family of Shelley Winters: I was so sorry to hear of her passing. I've admired her ever since I was a kid and saw her in a tv movie called The Devil's Daughter. She played a woman named Lilith, and she scared the hell out of me in that role(the sign of a great actress ! )! Since then, I've seen many of her other movies, such as The Diary of Anne Frank and The Poseidon Adventure (I loved Mrs. Rosen! ). What a talent ! She will be missed.
Sincerely,
Ann Joseph

ANOTHER GREAT ACTRESS. I REMEMBER ONE OF HER ROLES AS A DRUG KINGPIN IN THE MOVIE "CLEOPATRA JONES" (CIRCA:1973). THAT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MOVIES I SAW HER IN. NOT TOO MANY ACTRESSES FROM HER DAY COULD PLAY THAT ROLE, SHE WORKED IT. BUT I BELLIEVE THE BEST WAS "THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE". THANK YOU, THE WINTERS FAMILY FOR A VERY TALENTED PERSON! GOD BLESS!

Well I am actually not from Yukon Territory, but as the site does not list other countries than the States, your Mum (as we say here) would forgive me - I am from Australia - your Mum's books I have read many times, and I think they actually teach far more about the craft of acting than perhaps she thought they did - I know from her intro to the second book that she was worried about attention to her private life eclipsing the professional achievements, but as an actor, this was far from the truth - how amazing to see someone who continued to act on the stage for years - luckily we are beginning to see that happen again in our lifetime - but one has to go back to Hepburn (Katharine, not Audrey) to find a huge star happy to come to AUSTRALIA to do Shakespeare. Your Mum had the same kind of trouper spirit. I was really sad to hear of her passing, but then when I thought it through, I thought 85 years, two oscars, and a great career, a huge love of her daughter and family, was as we say in Oz, a pretty good run, so - thank you Shelley, especially for the books -and I expect the third one shortly. All my love - dave xx

I saw my mother crying on Saturday while watching the news. It was always a running joke in our house to "bring Shelley" when we went on trips. Mom had to have her books written by Shelley Winters. I remember her making us watch "A Place in the Sun" and then so thankful that she did. Although I am only 18, I know what we have lost and mom says "Goodbye Shelley Winter-never mind the S". Now I can see why my mother loved her books and movies, she was the end of an era.

My heart aches for the loss of Shelley. She was honestly a true actor in every sense of the word. From film, theatre, television, and author-Shelley never failed to hit her mark. With her passing, we are losing the last of the great old Hollywood stars. Gone from this earth but never forgotten. We are blessed to have the great legacy of work to laugh over, cry over and cherish that Shelley leaves us with. I sent her a letter about 4 months ago. I waited all these months for a postcard but I have something more viable-her stunning imprint left behind. Vittoria, God Bless you and your children-your mother was a great lady, but of course you know that!

Oh how I loved you, Oh how I’ll miss you
When I kissed you There was a light around you of white and Gold
How sad for all of us to lose you how wonderful it must have been in heaven to reserve you
I’ll keep looking to the heavens for that new star flittering
I’ll keep the memories of your child like ways and your beautiful smile
For they live here in my heart .

Having the great pleasure and privilege of having seen Miss Winters in person several times, I can attest to the fact that besides being a GREAT actress, she was a wonderful, kind, sweet person. She was great to her fans, always friendly and willing to sign autographs. She posed happily for a photo with me besides graciously signing her book. What a wonderful lady we have lost. She was the kind of person you would love to have had as a member of your own family. God bless you and may your soul rest in peace, Miss Winters. You were truly an idol of mine.

Shellys passing is indeed a great loss to the entertainment industry. Her grace and style was impeccible. I was extremely saddened when the media did not origionally mention her superb performace in the Poseiden Adventure. What a role for a lady of her age to play. She was truly an award winning actress. May she rest in peace, and she will be missed from the silver screen.
