Shirley Slater Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 1 to Oct. 3, 2012.
SLATER Shirley Schild Slater, age 89 years, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Harry A Slater, parents Harry and Hannah Schild, sister Rosalie Ross, and grandson Blake Charvat. She is survived by: son Larry Slater and wife Sue; daughter Madelene Edelman and husband Bill; daughter Rickie Charvat and husband Jim; sister Dena Grenell; grandchildren Julie and husband Jason, Ross, Paige and husband Jeff, Courtney, Chelsy and Sean; and great-grandchildren Tyler and Sadie; and nieces and nephews . Shirley was born on December 2, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana, but she resided most of her life in Houma, Louisiana. After becoming the "war bride" of Harry A Slater, the two remained in Houma and were married 63 years. Being a wife and mother meant everything to Shirley; and as her family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren she readily made space at her famous Thanksgiving table, cooking Kosher turkeys and her delicious stuffing. An avid gardener, one could reliably count on Shirley to know the name of a beautiful and obscure flower or tree. Another passion of Shirley's was Irish Setters; she always had a calendar of this favorite dog hanging in her kitchen. Additionally, Shirley was an active member of Houma's small Jewish community, hosting Shabbat services and attending services around the community. She also was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue in New Orleans, LA and Hadassah. The last four years Shirley continued her commitment to Judaism as a resident in the William Breman Jewish Home in Atlanta, Georgia. Fortunately, family remained close-by to keep her company. She was as beloved by the Breman Home community as she was by her Houma community. Traditional Jewish graveside service will be held at Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery, 4400 Elysian Fields, New Orleans, La. on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donate to a charity or cause of your choice. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Hi Madelene, Larry and Rickie,

I remember your mom fondly during my visits with Madelene in Houma. She always welcomed me warmly and made me feel comfortable as a guest in your home.

Last year on a visit to New Orleans, I drove to Houma and drove by your house. Still looks the same, I tried to find the Frostop drive in with no success. My sister Ellen is very much into geneology and keeps up with the Jewish news. I would love to hear from you all (y'all). Contact me at crew [at] passagemaking.net so we can catch up.

My sincere sympathy to the family, Ms. Shirley was always such a pleasure to talk to when ordering her flowers from us at House of Flowers in Houma. May she rest in peace.

I am so sad...it's like losing a member of my family. I am thinking of you all. Miss Shirley was so important to me that I would call her when in Houma visiting family....I did not have to explain who I was....I always felt welcome in her home....

I remember Ms. Shirley. I took care of her once when she was a patient at TGMC. Very nice lady. My prayers are with the family.
