Sidney Abraham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2023.
Sidney C. Abraham March 30, 1929 - November 1, 2023.

Sidney C. Abraham, born to John and Bessie Abraham on March 30, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa, has passed away. He was the beloved youngest sibling of two adoring sisters, Rae Epstein z"l and Hommey Kanter z"l, both of blessed memory.

Sid's journey in life was marked by remarkable achievements and a deep commitment to his family. He excelled in academics and athletics, graduating from Mapleton High School in Iowa, where he was known for his standout performances as an athlete. He went on to play on the University of Iowa Freshman Football Team, demonstrating his dedication to sports. He served his country in the Korean War earning the rank of Master Sergeant in the Army.

In 1953, Sid married the love of his life, Marilyn Judith Learner (of Rock Island, IL), with whom he built a fulfilling life in Omaha, Nebraska. Sid embarked on a successful career in the wholesale grocery business, eventually founding Midwest Foods Distribution Center. He was the perfect salesperson and employees, customers, and community leaders valued their relationships with him. His company thrived for over 40 years, supporting his growing family, and building lasting partnerships with clients, including the Strategic Air Command in Bellevue, Nebraska, and Omaha Public Schools. Sid's dedication to his work extended beyond his own business, as he became an active member of Nugget International, the wholesale grocers' association, and even served as its president. He was inducted into the Omaha Restaurant Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the industry.

Outside of his professional life, Sid and Marilyn were active supporters of Temple Israel and the Omaha Jewish Community Center. Sid participated in many sports: tennis, curling and golf. He and Marilyn won numerous Mr. and Mrs. golf tournaments at Highland Country Club (HCC). He also served on the HCC Food and Beverage committee and served as President of the HCC board of directors. He was an ardent supporter of Nebraska and Iowa football; he had season tickets for years to the College World Series, Omaha Knights Hockey Team and he even coached a little league baseball team. He enjoyed taking his wife, daughters, nieces, nephews, and friends to these games. He also loved playing cards, whether it was gin rummy, pitch, bridge, or poker, he usually came out on top.

Sid and Marilyn were blessed with four daughters: Stephanie, Carrie, Patti, and Terri. Sid cherished family time and shared his love for golf and vacations with his daughters and their husbands, Mike, Larry, and Joe. When Sid and Marilyn retired. they moved to Scottsdale and built the home of their dreams in a golf community. They made many new friends and Sid went to work with his daughter Carrie at her ad agency. His afternoons were spent either playing golf or cards with his regulars. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren: Brian, Brooke, Leslie, Cameron, Candace, and Rachel. He enjoyed teaching them golf, tennis and playing cards. Later in life, he was delighted by the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Hadleigh, Leighton, Emma, Mia, and Luka. Family was at the center of Sid's heart, and there is nothing he enjoyed more than sharing time, stories, and a great meal with all.

Sid also had a wide circle of relatives, including cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he enjoyed spending time with. He was known for his sense of humor, storytelling, and practical joke playing. Sid will be remembered for dedication to his profession and community, his ethical business practices, and the joy he took in spending time with friends and family. He leaves behind family and friends with special memories of the impact he had on their lives. Sidney will be dearly missed and forever cherished.

The family would like to acknowledge the team of caregivers who kept dad company and safe the last two years: Maria "Concha" Garcia, Ersa Divinagracia, Elvira Perches, and Glory Perez. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation https://www.alzdiscovery.org/donate to further the research on Alzheimer and/or to the Pacc911 https://pacc911.org/donate for his lifelong love of dogs.

Mr Abraham ´Sid´ was incredibly gracious to me at a time when I really needed it. His faith in me allowed me to go beyond my capabilities. Lessons learned and respect he gave me and my fellow workers was a gift from above. When he was upset with something you did he was quick to correct and encourage. Though my exposure was brief, his impact on me was lasting...... RIP

I worked for Sid for approximately 16 years and enjoyed getting to know him over the course of my employment. I found him to be a very approachable, fair and decent man. I enjoyed his sense of humor and the way he acknowledged your presence at whatever was going on, be it in daily passing or during one of his many holiday festivities for his employees. All in all, he was a good man. He´ll be sorely missed. God bless you Sid.

I was so impressed with Sidney Abraham. Seeing his enjoyment and celebration of family...he and Marilyn dancing at Leslie's engagement party...his pride at Stephanie's inaugural address at the annual conference in 2007. My condolences to all the Abraham Family.
