Sonia. Always beaming with light. I remember as the beautiful mother of my oldest friend in this world. I remember her smile, her dark wavy hair, sitting on the steps of the old house on Talbert. I wanted to know more about her, but I was only a little girl. I imagined she had the best life, just based on her smile.

I don´t remember our first meeting; only that she lived 2 blocks from me and we didn´t meet till after high school.
My favorite memory is when we were 21 we´d go to the Oar House Bar on Taravel St. for drinks and play backgammon. I´d go next door to the Great Highway Market to buy bananas, so Skip the bartender could make us Banana Daquiris.
A few games and daquiris in, Sonia went to throw her dice and threw her drink instead of the dice cup.
That was 49 years ago. The stain remains. (See picture)
A specific memory is when she was living on Pierce St. with Beni. I was having a party at my house in the Sunset. I stole my mother´s car, a `66 Ford Galaxie; 3 speed on the column. I didn´t know how to drive a clutch very well but I drove through GG Park along Presidio Drive and down Lombard to Beni´s. When I pulled into the driveway I scratched the bumper on Uncle Nino´s staircase. Luckily, my parents didn´t notice that. I don´t remember driving her home so she must have spent the night.
Sonia taught me to make Crab Cioppino Ala Pisana. We made that and entered it in an "amateur" Crab Cooking Contest on Pier 39. As delicious as it always is, it doesn´t present well on a plate. We garnished it with peaked lemon halves and parsley. We won 2nd place. HOWEVER, we learned the first place winner was a professional catering chef from The St. Francis Hotel who won for her Crab Cakes. I complained to the event judges. They asked me if I felt they should take the award back from the chef. I said Yes! They refused but we always had a good story about it. To this day, my family still requests I make it around crab season; holiday time.
Lastly, my niece still has the black cat I painted for my Mom in Nadia´s ceramics class.
I love them both and will always have happy warm memories of them.
