Sophia Regina Antoinette Wyma

Sophia Regina Antoinette Wyma October 7, 1915 December 8, 2010 Sophia (Toots) Wyma, (nee van Nes), age 95, late of Ladysmith, BC, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital, Nanaimo, BC. Toots is survived by her son, Robert G. (Florence), Saskatoon, SK; daughter, Valerie J. Bissett, North Vancouver, BC; her sister, Dina Brecknell of Saskatoon; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeased by her parents, Thomas and Sophie van Nes; her sister, Margaret; and her brothers, Thomas, David, Ralph and Joseph. Toots was born October 7, 1915 at Howell (later Prud'homme) SK, the sixth of seven children. The family homesteaded at Howell and relocated to Saskatoon in 1922, where she received her primary and secondary schooling. In 1936, she married Oeds George (Shorty) Wyma, remaining a resident of Saskatoon until relocating to Vancouver in early 1957. They returned to Saskatoon for a short time, but went back to Vancouver and subsequently, Ladysmith where she and Shorty lived retired. They enjoyed sixty two years of marriage, until Shorty passed in 1998. Toots was well known for her expertise in women's wear, and was active in selling women's apparel in Saskatoon and North Vancouver for many years. She also was active in Easter Star for many years. She was a proud custodian of family history, and actively maintained and communicated to the ever widening family circle. After retirement she and Shorty enjoyed travelling in North America and Europe, again developing family ties. She moved from her home at Town & Country near Ladysmith, becoming a well known and well liked acquaintance of many, as a result of her activities in church and seniors' organizations. She lived proudly independent until April, 2010, when illness curtailed her activities. She continued to maintain her social contacts with the assistance of her caregiver, Janet Carlson, until her passing. The family would like to thank all of her friends and neighbors, in both Saskatchewan and BC, Dr. Hatchwell, of Ladysmith, and the staff of Nanaimo Regional Hospital, and of course, Janet Carlson, ofr their loving care and attention. The Memorial Service was held December 14, 2010, at First Memorial Funeral Home, 1720 Bowen Rd., Nanaimo, BC with Fred Massey officiating. Interment will be with Shorty in Saskatoon, SK.
