I only knew your Mother for a short time, but she was such a sweet person. I work at the nursing home she was in, and she would come up to me, take me by the hand, and talk to me. She will be greatly missed, but I know she will forever watch over you and your family. Bless you, Yia Yia.

Sophie was a tiny, cute little woman who was in the room next door to my mother (Irma Schmitt) in Asbury Heights. My daughter and I were visiting mum the day Sophie was admitted. We heard the new person spoke almost no English. The three of us were in mum's room, when I looked up and there she was, cute little woman, speaking to us. My daughter got up to offer her a chair to come sit with us, when she said "NO", shook her head, waved Gwen off, and turned and started back down the hallway. Yia-Yia was the only Greek I knew, so that is what I called her.
I knew she was declining fast, but each time I went to see mum, I would hurry down the hall to see if Sophie's picture was still outside her door. Big sigh... it was so she was still there.
When we went in yesterday, Sunday, the picture was gone!! Oh no, Sophie was gone. Cry cry cry.
I wish I could have said goodbye to her, and the daughter I spoke with in the dining room last week. We could have cried together, as one of these days, when the Good Lord deems fit, mother will be with my dad, and her grandson she never got to hold.
God Bless you Sophie.
Sending our deepest sympathies.
