STEPHEN GILBERT Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Sep. 18, 2013.
GILBERT, Stephen Edward
1958-2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Steve Gilbert at the age of 55. Steve died September 13, 2013 after fearlessly fighting a number of illnesses. He leaves behind his love and soul-mate of 17 years Colleen Pyves and his two step-sons Rowan and Eric Phendler. Steve is mourned by his mother Joyce, his brothers Randy and Bob and their families. He will be lovingly remembered by his adopted family Julia Pyves (Tom), Rick Pyves (Judy), Leslie Pyves and their families as well as many friends. He was dearly loved by the late Kathleen Pyves. Steve was raised in Chambly by his father Albert Bert Gilbert and mother Joyce Draper and lived in the Eastern Townships most of his adult life. Steve worked for close to 30 years for Owl's Head Ski Hill in Mansonville, Quebec both in the ski rental shop equipping and greeting more than one generation of families for a day of skiing and in the Apartment-Hotel. Owl's Head was a second family for Steve. Steve was kind and gentle and developed many strong individual contacts with people. He had a dichotomy of interests and skills stemming from motocross and canoing as a younger man to "whipping" up a great meal much to the pleasure of his step-sons and anyone fortunate enough to partake. Steve completed his CEGEP and took journalism courses in Ottawa. He loved to read and was very knowledgeable on a wide range of topics. Family and friends are invited to "A Celebration of Steve's Life" at the Owl's Head Ski Chalet situated at 40, chemin du Mont Owl's Head, Mansonville, Quebec, J0E 1X0, Friday, September 20th from 2:30 to 6:00. Donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada in honour of Steve's mother Joyce Gilbert (Draper). Online condolences may be made at www.remembering.ca.

Steve was always a great friend growing up. We shared many a good time that will always be in my most precious memories. He taught me courage, and the will to never give up.

I will forever be blessed with the grand image of your enquiring glance, your eyes sparkling with insight and awareness as you would listen to me trying to make sense of life. Then your smile, up to then respectfully suppressed, would escape and play across your face and you would lean in and say “No, No .. Garth don't you get it...” While many people struggle to find the dots and to figure out how they connect you would take a glance and be musing over all the patterns the lines make. You will always be in my heart.

Dear Steve, it was our great honor and privilege to have known you for so many years at Owl's Head. Our family remembers you with fond memories of the skill and patience you always showed us. So glad to have shared that sunny day on the boat with you, then meeting Colleen in Magog for lunch. Always in our thoughts and prayers, the Gerrard Family.
P.S. have a beer with CJ, maybe you can get Robbie to pour it for you

Where to start...Steve was such a gentle man and a gentleman. He was a great friend at Richelieu Valley Regional High School. Had some great conversations on the bench in the caf and latter teenage years in Chambly. He had the best hair..lol sorry but that is something I really remember from way back when. Anyone who knew him will know what I mean. I lost touch with him but he touched my heart and that is something I will always hold dear...that will never be lost. Thanks for being part of my life Steve. Condolences to all his family and friends.

You could always count on Steve to rescue your kids brand new skis from the front of the chalet on a Monday morning. Was well worth several cases of beer. So sorry...

I worked with Stephen for 5 years in that ski shop at Owl`s Head and never once did he have anything negative to say. Smart would have been an understatement, Knowledge of all subjects absolutely. Kind and thoughtful, Steve would stay late if you needed your skis sharpened for a trip to another mountain the next day. or if your car wouldn't start guess who had booster cables. Gift of gabb he had it, but not boring stuff content that was current or interesting. Love you buddy I really can say I learned loads having spent all that time with you. So happy to have seen you this past winter.

Stephen, my best friend. We grew up together! Thanks for the challenges and showing me how. I never met anyone so strong. I think if we all got together and shared our stories we still would not know the depth of who you were and what you have done for people you met. Love Gordie

Truly a sad day. Though it has been many years since we last met, I will remember that day forever. Labour Day weekend at the Brome Fair, we shared a pint and talked of old times. A great friend and trusted pal, I will remember you for the rest of my days. We shared good times and tough times and through it all we remained friends. Thanks for the memories Steve, God bless.
