Stephen Thorne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 23, 2025.
Stephen J. Thorne "We've had one hell of a ride. Haven't we guys?" were the last words of Steve Thorne when he passed on February 11 surrounded by the love of his family.

That ride included his love of the outdoors, providing firewood to friends and family while clearing budworm kill from his land north of town, prospecting and rock hounding in NM's northern mountains, hosting the Baaku Archaeological Project, being Santa at Arroyo Seco Mercantile, plowing the driveways and roads of neighbors, skiing down Taos Mountains in his tie-dyed tuxedo jacket on Mardi Gras, hang gliding in the Sandias and petting every dog he ever saw.

Steve will be missed by his wife, Randy: twin sister, Stephanie Medoff; brother, Paul Thorne; son, Micah and wife Heather Sladek; granddaughters, Crysta Poage and Sarah Sladek; in-laws, Robin and Sheila Gray; nephews, Seth, Jacob and Asa Gray; and nieces, Debra Marks, Rachel Harrison and Jesscia Medoff.

Memorial services TBA.

Steve was an instant friend to Rory and I when we came to Taos. He brightened up the clinic by giving everyone he knew a hug every time he came in. Steve never hesitated to talk skiing with us- even when in the crowded produce section at Smiths, he was jazzed to share tips to improve form. We were fortunate to know Steve, and we will miss him. Randy and family close to Steve- you all are in our prayers during this time of loss. Hugs,
Jen and Rory Yurkovich

Yes, what a ride! He always made the moment more fun with his big grin and deep chuckle. Add to the memories that of Steve bringing a birthday cake into the fourth grade classroom to celebrate Randy´s extra special day. Was that #50? #60? It was all great cheer when Steve showed up. He will be remembered with great big love and gratitude.
