This is the first anniversary of Steve's passing.
I think of him and Eileen with great frequency and often shed a tear when I do.
Steve and I met in the fall of 1944, in kindergarten. We became friends in first and third grade. (The entire first grade class skipped the second grade.) We cemented the friendship in the Parkchester West quadrant playground where, along with some of those third grade kids, we formed the basketball team that eventually became The Eagles. We learned to play well together as a team and stayed together as friends and a team, through high school, winning numerous championships along the way. Steve was a terrific player. His skill, spirit and sense of humor, were a key to our victories, also allowing many of us remain friends to this day.
When Steve met, dated, and eventually "millied", that is married, Eileen, he really hit the jackpot. What a couple!
Eileen became an Eagle wife and a Parkchester enthusiast, by osmosis and immersion. That was important to Steve and to all of us.
Steve had accommodated to his medical symptoms, with guts and humor, throughout his life. When his condition began to seriously deteriorate, Eileen became his champion and his care taker. Her love for him and his love for her was always obvious.
I will continue to miss Steve.
My wife Deborah and I wish Eileen all the happiness in the world. She deserves only the best! There is no doubt in my mind that Steve would wish that as well.

Steve and Eileen retired and wintered in Florida in the Fall of 2007, as we did also. The bond of friendship was made in the pool that year and continues today. Steve, we will love you forever

My wife, Marcia and I had not contacted Steve for many years (having grown up together in Parkchester), until "9-11". Marcia said, "He's right there, where it happened, near Joe; please check on them." I did and our ancient friendship was rekindled for another 15 yrs. One memory from childhood came to mind which I wonder if Joe or Howie remember; it was in Steve's bedroom. I think we were"Blackhawks" (pre-Eagles!) and we were trying to make basketball plays. I believe Steve said, "when the other team player tries to get the ball, tickle him first." Someone else said, "Maybe one of us could sneeze to distract them". My memory is we all were on the floor laughing with our "Sneeze/Tickle" play. I'm looking forward to seeing Steve again in the next dimension to hear what really happened that day.

May the laughter you engendered and the dignity you demonstrated in your life live on in all those who knew and loved you. It is a beautiful legacy.

I've known Steve Weiss since the first grade and we were the best of friends. What made Steve so special is he never let health issues even at a young age prevent him from doing his life's work. Although we went our separate ways we always new how fortunate we were to discover each other. I am very comforted in my grief that Steve was so blessed to have Eileen by his side. Steve's passing on the opening day of the baseball season is perfectly fitting for a human being who was a winner all of his life.

As He always said, You'll never get over it, but you'll get on with it. You are greatly missed and your words of wisdom will be cherished forever. Steve, my uncle, always took the road less traveled by and that made the difference. He will always be remembered as a man of great wisdom, love, and clarity. My favorite times were always spent together around the dinner table, where he would tell stories of his youth, our family, and our lineage. May we always remember his spirit and love. We adore you.

Oh Steve, we miss you. Your caring about us and your sense of humor were as refreshing as the breezes we felt sitting on the great, wide deck in Peru, MA.
You were a wonderful husband to our dear friend Eileen.

Uncle Steve was always kind and generous towards us (his nephew and and niece). We enjoyed his easygoing demeanor and sage advice. He was a sweet man who valued authenticity. His idea of success was doing what you loved and helping people along the way. We will miss him and his awesome sense of humor.
May God bless and be merciful to our sweet Uncle.
In Jesus name,
Amen

I remember spending one summer of my childhood up in Peru, MA with Uncle Steve and Aunt Eileen (and of course "Sal the Salamander", whom Uncle Steve helped us name). Many fond memories of Uncle Steve at family get-togethers and holidays. He was a great man and will be missed dearly by many. Thoughts and prayers...may his soul rest in peace.

Steve and I grew up in the very special community of Parkchester, in The Bronx. We met in Kindergarten in September 1944. Steve and many of those kids and I, played together in the school yard and the neighborhood playground. We stayed together as a group. In the third grade we formed into an athletic team, initially basketball. We remained together through high school.
Even in those earliest days, we noticed that Steve limped a bit. Juvenile Arthritis we were told. We did not know what that meant. We did know it never stopped Steve from playing every sport that we did and doing them all quite well: basketball, handball, tennis, softball, baseball. (He had a great curveball.) He never complained although we knew he often played in pain. His sense of humor and caring compassionate ways let people know that he was ok with the world and the world was ok with him.
Steve was a very special guy. He was the kind of guy you would want as a friend, I'm sure glad he was mine. I miss him!
My heart goes out to Eileen who stood by Steve's side with help and love through these last difficult times.

I will always remember Steven coming to Perkins Elementary to volunteer in the classrooms. He had so much experience to share with the teachers and students. I remember a student asking me when Dr. Weiss was coming as they were supposed to play cards. The student was very excited as he had been practicing the card game at home and just knew he was going to win this time. He was well loved by all the teachers and students he worked with at Perkins. So glad he was able to continue sharing his knowledge with others even though he was retired. He was a great educator and will be missed greatly!

It was such a privilege to meet Steve and Eileen over fifteen years ago in New York City. While the friendship grew and flourished, I was always impressed by Steve's sensitivity and psychological insights. Eileen has also become the dearest of friends, and we will continue to celebrate Steve's beautiful legacy whenever we're together. May the Almighty comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I think of Steve often, and have many fond memories. As the Executive Director of Ramapo, I hired Steve during his tenure at NYU to support and train new counselors. His help was immeasurable, as was his friendship.
Here's to you Steve, and I'll order up a Doers with a twist for us both!
