Steve Cannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2008.
SOUTHSIDE Steve L. Cannon, age 61, of Southside, died May 20, 2008. Graveside services with full Military Honors will be 1 p.m. Friday at Crestwood Cemetery with Rev. Frank Samuels officiating and Crestwood Funeral Home of Gadsden directing. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

He was born in Tuscaloosa to Bill and Helen Cannon and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1965. He lived in Montgomery, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa before moving to Gadsden.

Master Sergeant Cannon served his country as a member of the Alabama National Guard since June 20, 1965. He began his career as a cook for the 2nd Brigade 31st Infantry Division until April of 1974 when he was reclassified as a Chaplains Assistant for the same unit. In March of 1975 he began work as a recruiter for the Alabama National Guard on Active Duty State Work until May of 1982. During this time he helped to build the strength of the Alabama Guard and increase involvement in local communities. In 1982 he began his career in the administrative area by becoming the full time unit clerk for the 31st Engineering Company in Fayette. He continued with his career development, and in 1987 was promoted to the rank of 1st Sergeant for the company until his transfer to the 31st Armor Brigade in Northport. MSG Cannon worked at Brigade headquarters in Northport from March 1989 until September 2005, and was instrumental in the deployment of several units within the Brigade to Afghanistan and Iraq. His expertise ensured that each unit was prepared and their records complete. In 2005 he voluntarily transferred to 152nd CM BN to work as both the Operations Sergeant and the Administrative NCO for the Battalion as a backfill for their soldier deployed with other units.

He is survived by his wife, Tricia Cannon; daughter, Kathryn Fickling of Birmingham; brother, Skip (Ninette) Cannon of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Fickling; stepsons, Terrell Thrasher and Trent (Jenny) Thrasher of Southside; stepgrandchildren, Gabriella Antonelli, Chloe Antonelli, and Tyler Thrasher.

Pallbearers will be MAJ (Ret) Bert Hedrick, MSG (Ret) Jimmy Albright, MSG J.C. Hunter, MSG Donny Hunter, MSG Durand Minton, SFC John Mills.

I just heard about Sgt. Cannons passing. My huband and I are very saddened by this news. He was very kind and helpful to our son which was in his unit and has been serving in Iraq. He checked on us often during Jonathans deployment. He truly cared about all people. He will be truly missed.

"Bunny" and I were good friends our whole lives, through high school & college. We were in each other's weddings and at each of our daughter's births! Although we had lost touch over the past few years, I thought of him often and am sadden that I did not learn of his death until after the funeral as I surely would have been there to pay tribute to a dear old friend with whom I had many memorable experiences. Dear "Bunny" you will be missed.

I still vision Steve and I coming back from a weekend visit in Mississippi carrying on a hell of a conversation about anything and everything. I still see Steve at J.C. Hunters backyard and pool cooking ribs. I pray some day to see Steve and all the brothers from HHC 31st Armor in the right place, Heaven. Steve. I'll be watching for you. My sympathies to the family.

I am a cousin of Steve's and have fond memories from childhood when we called him "Bunny". I am sending a photo from about 1955. Steve is the one holding the camera (as if you couldn't tell!). The others in the picture are his brother Skip (sitting on the ground), me (holding the baby, "Puddy" Maughan), my sister Anne and my brother Snow, and Danny and Ruthie Beard. It was taken at the Beard house where we spent many holidays with all the Beard family. I will not be able to attend the service tomorrow due to other family obligations, but please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with your family at this time of sorrow.

Steve was a generous man to those who needed him. His life in the military proved his generosity, not only to his country, but also his fellow man. If someone was in need he did what he could for them. I know he will be missed by his wife, Tricia, his family and friends. I am glad Steve had someone in his life to help him through his last days with us. Thank you Tricia. May the Peace of our Lord be with you. God Bless You.
