Steve Corey

Steve Corey, 65, of Austin, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, of post-surgery complications.

He was born in Winona on Sept. 10, 1952, to Richard and Delores (Pavek) Corey. He attended and graduated from Austin Public Schools. He met his one true love ,Cheryl Oldenburg, when he was 19 and she was 14. While attending classes at Riverland Community College, he was drafted to serve his country in the Army in Korea as a communications specialist. That began a lifelong love of radios and electronics. He was honorably discharged in 1974.

Steve and Cheryl married on April 23, 1975. He finished college, then worked as a salesman for the Charles F. Fox Wholesale Co. for many years. Later, he worked for Hormel Foods where he was still employed at the time of his death.

Steve and Cheryl's union brought them two beloved sons, Ryan (and wife, Amanda) Corey of Austin, and Chad Corey, of Rochester.

Steve leaves behind his wife and best friend of 42 years, Cheryl Corey; sons, Ryan and Chad; daughter-in-law, Amanda Corey, and four beautiful grandchildren. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Marlene Oldenburg; brothers, Wayne Corey of Wheatridge, Colo., Lee Corey (Helene) of Orangeburg, N.Y., and Jay Corey (Tammy) of Austin; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Susan and John Eggers of Rochester, Brad and Karen Oldenburg of Austin, and Sandy and John Fish of Rochester. He had and loved many, many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, close friends, neighbors and co-workers, and his little buddy, Lacy, the family Yorkie.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; mother, Delores Mae Corey in 1974; his father, Richard Corey in 1997; his father-in-law, Eugene Oldenburg in 1997; his brother, Gregory Corey in 2008; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Steve was a longtime member of the Austin Amateur Radio Club and had many good friends there, especially Carl Rayman.

The Corey family covets your prayers in this difficult time. Steve loved the Lord Jesus. He was so greatly loved by his family and will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.

A  funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Crane Community Chapel, with the Rev. Dale Christiansen and the Rev. David Simerson officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 2, at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.
