Steven Floyd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 25 to Oct. 26, 2022.
Steven W. Floyd (72), a distinguished professor of management, died October 18th at his home after a brief illness. Dr. Floyd was a leading scholar in the areas of strategy process and change. During his career he published more than one hundred research articles and scholarly books. He was an active member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies, and other professional associations. As significant as his own research, Steve made important contributions as a journal editor, reviewer, and mentor. Indeed, Steve's greatest professional legacy may be the dozens of doctoral students and junior faculty he unselfishly nurtured and mentored. At the time of his death, Steve was working with, and mentoring students of his former students, helping them launch their careers and build the pipeline of the next generation of management scholars. As one of his former doctoral students commented, "He was beyond just an advisor. He was a life mentor to me. We shared a love and commitment towards family, nature, travel, and would spend considerable amounts of time talking about those things. His warmth and consideration as a human being and his abundant energy towards life inspired me to become like him, now and always."

Steve was born in Phoenix, AZ on February 2, 1950. His Father Morris, served in the Airforce during World War II and was a POW survivor. Morris died in 1952. His Mother, Beuna "Boots," a church administrator, married his stepfather, Raymond Reed, a career officer in the Airforce in 1960. As part of a military family, Steve spent his formative years at various military bases both in the U.S. and Europe where he developed fluency in German. He graduated from Folsom High School in Folsom California in 1968 and earned his BA (with honors) in philosophy from the University of Houston in 1972.

On May 19, 1973, Steve married Beverly Weaver (nee) and her two young children, James and Aaron, who he adored and raised as his own. Together, the family embarked on a lifelong journey that began with the birth of their third son, Steve, Jr. They relocated to Virginia where Steve worked for the Department of Labor and, taking advantage of his carpentry skills, eventually co-founded and successfully operated a furniture making company.

In 1976 the family relocated again, this time to Boulder Colorado. Steve entered the MBA program at the University of Colorado, graduating in 1978. Following his MBA, Steve served as the President of Industrial Industries, Inc., a manufacturing firm in Houston, TX. While successful as a business executive, Steve kept reflecting on the multiple professors who had encouraged him to get a PhD and enter academia. A natural scholar, Steve left his position in industry and earned his PhD in Management from the University of Colorado in 1986.

During his career Professor Floyd held faculty positions at Old Dominion University, University of Massachusetts, Amherst (Twice), University of Connecticut, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and University of Virginia. At the time of his retirement, he held a chaired position as the Isenberg Professor of Management at the Isenberg School of Management, UMass Amherst.

Steve was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He coached his son's basketball teams and being an avid skier, taught the boys how to ski at very young ages. He spent countless weekends on the ski slopes of Colorado with his wife, sons, and family friends. He became a father figure to many of his sons' friends, helping them build a skateboard ramp and even a snowboard slope in the backyard. Kids were always welcome at the Floyd house.

He was also an avid traveler, outdoor and fitness enthusiast, and musician. He played basketball and performed in a rock band during high school and pursued rock climbing as a young adult. He ran10ks and marathons; enjoyed skiing, sailing, cycling, tennis, hiking, and windsurfing. He loved weightlifting and working out. Together, he and Beverly saw the world on their numerous and frequent excursions.

During his final years Steve battled Parkinson's disease with the same intellectual curiosity he brought to his profession. Never one to complain, he studied the medical literature, reading everything he could find, eventually becoming a self-taught expert on the disease and its treatment. With self-discipline, determination, and courage he "fought the good fight," still taking kick-boxing classes in the last months of his life.

Beyond all this, Steve will perhaps best be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, warm, and generous soul. In the words of a former colleague - "He was the most humble and non-judgmental person I've ever known. He never had an unkind word for anybody. A true Gentleman. A real scholar".

Steve was preceded in death by his mother Beuna "Boots" Reed, fathers Morris Floyd and Raymond Reed, brother Patrick Reed and daughter in law Adri Brongers. He is survived by his wife Beverly, his three sons - James, Aaron, his wife Hannah, and Steve Jr. and his partner Adriana Vega. Steven leaves six grandchildren: Dominic McKinney, Ella, Coral, Jamie, and Corrine Floyd and Annabella Mackler. He is also survived by siblings Morris Floyd & Alex Herrera, Kiki and Larry House, Ray and Tish Reed and Kelley and Bill Peck.

The unexpected death of Steve has shaken me deeply. Until last I had contact with him, although unfortunately not as often as before. It was Steve who believed in my ideas almost two decades ago, which was admirable and proved of his greatness, since my background was a completely different discipline. Over the years, he has been with me as a PhD thesis advisor, mentor, and also as a friend. Today, I pass on much of what he imparted to me to young students. In short, Steve shaped my professional career like no other personality. I am incredibly grateful to him for this and will carry his intellectual "legacy" into the future with great respect.

I had the pleasure and privilege to know Steve and to learn from him. He was a great scholar but even more so a wonderful human being who was always willing to help others. I cherish the memories of our many encounters from Lyon to various Academy meetings over the years. He will be dearly missed. My thoughts are with Steve's family and loved ones.

Dear Beverely,

Please accept my condolences. What a beautiful and complete eulogy. I trust you will be able to overcome Steve´s loss and transform this grief into your fabulous artwork. I remember fondly the time spent in Barcelona with both of you. Steve was a mentor and friend to many of us in the profession and he will be missed a lot. I want to say thanks for all I learned from Steve both from his example and from his teachings.

Steve was one of the smartest, kindest, and most generous professors I have ever known. Many of his doctoral students would also add sexiest. He had it all - and on top of everything - an amazingly fun, gorgeous and inspiring wife! And yet, he was always humble and a gentleman - someone who enjoyed helping others, especially junior academics achieve their first publications! The last time I saw him and Bev was in Paris - we had dinner after going to the amazing L´Atelier des Lumieres exhibit. Coincidentally, I´m going to the show now in NYC in a few weeks. I´ll send many prayers and well wishes to Bev and Steve´s family while there. Like the artists featured in the show, Steve inspired so many of us and simply being around him, always brought peace and light.

Much love,

Kim & Rob Eddleston

Steve's many academic accolades can never match what he gave the rest of us as a friend and exemplar. He was a kind and giving human being who will be sorely missed.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Steve's passing. He was one of the most majestic thinkers of our field and managed to carry his fame with great modesty. He is partially responsible for getting me interested in research.

Rest in wisdom and grace Steve.

A great scholar and teacher. Our careers dove-tailed in many ways, as we both enjoyed time at UMass and UConn, and we connected at many AOM and SMS meetings. A person's best legacy is his family, and he clearly had two great families: his wife and sons, and his students and colleagues. His light shines on. Thanks, Steve, for the inspiration.

I count Steve as one of the most significant mentors of my academic career. He encouraged me to step out, be bold, and not be afraid of what anyone else thought about the work I was doing as long as I believed in it. He taught me to be a tough but compassionate professor. Thank you Steve for all the ways you encouraged and challenged me over the years. My sympathy to his family in the loss of a true gentleman and leader. May all of us who knew him continue to live out his legacy.

I was so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I worked with Steve for many years at UConn delivering instruction in both our EMBA program and other Exec Ed programs that I managed. I could always count on Steve to deliver a quality program. He was also a very caring person and he interacted extremely well with all our students. My condolences to Beverly and the rest of his extended family. He will very much be missed. RIP

What an amazingly accomplished human being Steve was. But most important are the tributes to his kindness, humility and generosity people have acknowledged. How lucky were you as a family to have a husband and father like him?

Beautiful tribute to a true gentleman scholar. I have fond memories of Steve's extremely developmental nature in coaching aspiring academics. And he was so humble despite being accomplished in so many areas- certainly as a strategy scholar, but also in his running, German language skills, and real business acumen.

No doubt, Steve was a top-notch scholar and colleague. Mo and I will miss our dinners with Steve and Bev. I found Steve's passing a real shock, and stand at the ready to help Bev and the family. I recall many years ago when we were in Egypt and the great time we had. Rest in Peace Steve, you will be missed.

Beverly, James, Aaron, Steve, Jr., grandchildren and partners.

The obituary you wrote for Steve is beautiful. He was an exceptional human being in so many ways and the obituary describes him so well: His intellectual accomplishments were abundant. He was a dedicated scholar which was always so impressive--especially since he always played it down. But his kindness, devotion and humility shine through above all in your beautiful tribute to him. All of you gave Steve so much joy, and Beverly was an amazingly devoted and joyful partner. You were all so fortunate to have him in your lives and he was fortunate to have you. His kindness and acceptance of all people is unforgettable. He will always be in my heart--and all of you are in my thoughts.

Love,
Sheridan
