Steven Katz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2025.
Steven Arthur Katz, born on September 13, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully at his home in Ormond Beach, Florida, on January 30, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Steven spent his early years on Long Island, New York, before moving to South Florida, where he graduated from Nova High School in Davie. A gifted percussionist, he performed with the South Florida Youth Symphony and later played in several bands, nurturing a lifelong passion for music that remained central to his life.

Beyond his love for music, Steven was an avid motorcyclist who cherished the freedom and tranquility of riding his Harley-Davidson. He fondly referred to these rides as "wind therapy," a source of joy and solace throughout his life.

Professionally, Steven dedicated 26 years to Johnson Controls, Inc., where he excelled as a Senior Controls Technician working in Asheville, Charlotte, Tampa and Jacksonville where he later advanced to a Service Manager for the Controls Team at that branch. His expertise in large building automation earned him widespread respect and admiration from colleagues and customers alike.

Steven is survived by his devoted wife, Abbie Katz; his beloved daughter, Shelby Katz; and his stepchildren, Sandi Crasnow Ancona, Greg Crasnow, and Brad Crasnow. He was a proud grandfather to Effie Ancona and Liam Lazenby. He also leaves behind his cherished mother, Harriet Katz; his brother Ken Katz (Leslie); his sister Suzanne Katz; his nephew Josh Katz, his niece Jessica Bickel; and his uncle Karl Goldberg. Steven was predeceased by his father Marvin Katz.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to those who prayed for Steven during his battle with cancer. They also thank Dr. Leslie Williams, Dr. Mudussara Khan, Dr. Padmaja Sai, the oncology staff at Florida Cancer Specialists in Daytona Beach and Palm Coast, Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and Halifax Health Hospice.

Steven's life was defined by the love he shared with his family and the memories they created together. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, to honor Steve's wishes, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Moffitt Cancer Center at Moffitt.org

My deepest sympathies and condolences for the Katz family. I met Steve Katz when I started at Johnson controls 8 years ago at the tampa branch although I didn´t get to work with him much the times I did he was alway cracking jokes and was always friendly talking about motorcycle or music. I then became close with Abby whom worked in our office anything I needed or had a question about she was there to answer. I am grateful to have know such and amazing couple my heart goes out to you and your family Abby during this difficult time.

Steven was one of the kindest, dedicated and nicest person I knew. I often told him he was my favorite human. We worked together on the Controls team and often discussed life, Music, doggies and cancer. He had a wonderful witty sense of humor. We would laugh and when he was having a hard time we would just sit together sometimes in silence as we had an unspoken understanding of his diagnosis and treatment. My deepest condolences Abbie.
