Susan Amelia Eicher, M.D.
09/21/1962 - 05/01/2023
Susan Amelia Eicher, M.D. passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2023.
Daughter of William R. Eicher and Jeanette A. Eicher (nee Medick), Susan Amelia Eicher was born on September 21, 1962, in New Jersey. Following her early years in Wayne, New Jersey, Susan grew up in Houston, Texas, graduating co-valedictorian from Cypress Creek High School in 1980. A four-year letter winner in swimming at Rice University, she graduated, summa cum laude in 1984. She earned her medical degree with Highest Honors at Baylor College of Medicine in 1988 and was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement by being named the DeBakey Scholar, a singular honor for a member of her class.
Also in 1988, Susan married Mark A. Jenkins, M.D., in the chapel at Rice University. They were married for 23 years prior to their divorce in 2011.
Dr. Eicher completed her residency in General Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at BCM and successfully finished a Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center after which she joined the MDACC faculty in the Head and Neck Surgery Department as an Assistant Professor, eventually becoming chief of one of the head and neck surgical teams. In 2002, Susan returned to BCM as an Associate Professor in the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and became Chief of Service at Ben Taub Hospital in 2004. She served with distinction before stepping down in 2016, but she continued to supervise and teach students and residents until her early retirement in February 2023 precipitated by a devastating hand injury and medical issues that prevented her from being able to operate and care for patients.
Susan demonstrated an extraordinary personal commitment to the care of the indigent and was equally dedicated to medical education. She mentored numerous medical students and residents throughout her academic career and served as a role model for patient advocacy. Her career was cut short by unfortunate health issues that took away what she loved most, which was caring for patients with head and neck cancer, performing surgery, and working with students and residents at Ben Taub Hospital.
Apart from medicine, Susan had a passion for personal fitness and sports -- swimming, cycling, weightlifting, martial arts, and women's professional football. In fact, she played for the Houston Energy in the early 2000s. She also devoted time to the San Jacinto Council of the Girl Scouts and raised generations of Labrador retrievers.
Susan is preceded in death by her parents, William R. and Jeanette A. Eicher, and brother William M. Eicher. Susan is survived by one brother, Jeff (Wendy) Eicher, and niece Amanda Eicher. Furthermore, she is survived by her beloved Labrador retrievers, Kelsey, Cleo, and Mikahla.
The family would like to thank her friends Lee Overstreet and Cheryl Smith for their devoted care, and Dr. Donald Donovan and Dr. Doug Appling for their enduring support.
Services will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 W. Alabama St., Houston, Texas 77098. A visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Following the funeral service, a reception will be held until 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to either to the Resident Education Fund in the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, the Banfield Foundation (https://www.banfieldfoundation.org), or the Houston SPCA (https://houstonspca.org/).
The family is being served by Bradshaw-Carter Memorial & Funeral Services of Houston, Texas.

Just heard about this. I am truly sorry for the families loss. She was an accessional person and gave her all to her profession. I appreciate her nd all that she accomplished. She saved my life back when and I will forever be grateful. May she be with us always.

Dr Eicher helped my Uncle, Billy Doyle Smith, with everything she had. My uncle had a very devistating form of cancer, he was only 1 of 6 on earth at the time who had ever had this diagnosis. Dr Eicher went beyond the accepted boundaries of medicine to save my Uncle Bill, she gave it everything she had, so did he. We had my uncle for approximately 10 years, the expectancy of his illness was approximately 6 months. I wish I had thought to meet her, so I could thank her .

Susan was my classmate at Baylor, and also chose otolaryngology as her career. I remember rotating on Dr. Alford´s service with her, or in her shadow of brilliance and hard work. We had a great time, she inspired me to work harder and be better and I made her laugh.

I was so sorry to hear of her passing and hope her family and friends are comforted by their happy memories.

Susan was my roommate for three years at BCM. She was an amazingly driven person and she studied so hard. But Friday night she would go to her boyfriend´s place and watch MASH. Otherwise it was study, swim, study, sleep, and repeat. Her mom would call hoping to catch her to discuss wedding details but Mrs Eicher would often be stuck talking to me instead. She was a force of nature, but a quiet one. No one was surprised when she was the DeBakey scholar. I´m so sad that her career ended not on her terms May her memory always be a blessing

Dr. Eicher cared for my dad in 2004, and he adored her (my whole family did). She was so compassionate and he loved her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Dr. Eicher led us to the perfect oncologist and helped us start the journey for my dad's homegoing. She was a very special person, and I am so very sorry for your loss.

Susan Eicher saved my life with surgery in 2006 and we became close friends. She was so dedicated and diligent in her work. When I expressed awe for her accomplishments she brushed it off and humbly said, "It's surgery, and it's what I do." And she did it exceptionally well and saved thousands of lives. She was loved by patients and respected by her medical peers. She will be missed by many and irreplacable for those who loved her and those who worked with her. Through tears I say goodbye, but with love I will remember and admire her always.

Susan literally was a major part of saving my life in 2003-stage 4 cancer. She referred to me as her miracle patient. We also became friends over the years.
Through tears I say thank you Susan and we shall miss you!

Dr. Eicher loved spending time at Girl Scout Camp Casa Mare, and I'd like to share a photo of the view she enjoyed so much. She always seemed to have time to answer a call for help, and she has made a difference in the lives of thousands of girls through the years. Grief can be so hard, but our fond memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always.

One of my favorite memories that I have of my Aunt Susan was one when I was 11 or 12 years old at the time. This particular memory involves her first two dogs Copper and Shadow. I remember hanging out with her that afternoon before spending time with my grandparents later that evening. We were at the house hanging out and Susan goes, "Hey you wanna see something?"

I go "Yeah!"

She went over to the back door, and swung it open and hollered "Squirrel!"

Copper and Shadow proceeded to bolt out into the backyard in an attempt to catch the squirrel before it dashed up the tree. So the end result was Squirrel 1, dogs 0.

I love you Aunt Susan!
