Susan MacMillan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2017.
Susan Grace (Olson) MacMillan

Slingerlands - Susan Grace (Olson) MacMillan, 51, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at The Hospice Inn within St. Peter's Hospital. Susan's memory will be embraced by her beloved partner of 17 years, Stan Smith, and her four children; Sydney Grace (23) of Manhattan Beach, CA, Taylor Andrew (22), Kyle Christopher (20) and Hayden James (18) of Slingerlands, NY. Susan was the daughter of Janice Viola of Poughkeepsie, NY and Carl Olson of Delmar, NY. Survivors include her sister Alice Olson of Poughkeepsie and brother Peter Olson of Averill Park, NY, and stepfather Michele Viola of Poughkeepsie, NY.

Susan was born in Port Chester, New York on November 18, 1965 and grew up in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. She attended John Jay High School and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Albany Medical College. Susan worked in the NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Albany Medical Center for several years before transitioning to the insurance industry. Upon learning of her own diagnosis of Angio Sarcoma; a very rare bone cancer, Susan discovered how little is known of this disease. She donated samples for further research and left her body to the Albany Medical College.

Susan enjoyed nurturing things; people, animals, gardens and her home. Over the past few years she balanced her work life by raising her children, renovating her cedar shake style home, raising her precious Australian Labradoodles (Sheba and Poppy), and traveling to the beach whenever possible. She leaves behind several friends and family members and her legacy of making everyone in her presence feel a beautiful sense of calm, peace and joy. She will be greatly missed.

There will be no funeral services. Susan requested a Celebration of Life to be held in honor of her memory at a later date.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family, I am so sorry and shocked at Susan's passing. We grew up together as children. I remember spending weeks during the summer at Aunt Janice's house playing with Alice, Susan and Peter. Susan was a wonderful cousin and friend. She will be missed very much by everyone. She had such a loving and caring personality. I love you Susan and miss you.

I am so shocked and sorry to hear about Susan's passing. We went to Albany Medical Center School of Nursing, Class of June 1986, and we were so happy to have her drop by unexpectedly at our 30th reunion last year. She was an amazing girl, and an even more amazing woman who we all loved. She will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones.

I'm so sorry to hear about Susan. I went to nursing school with her which made us very close at the time. As we all parted ways to pursue our careers, I lost track of her and many of my classmates. So sad to hear about her illness and struggles. My prayers are with you all.

Mr. Smith, It only took me a few minutes into meeting Katie in Australia to know what an amazing person she was, and I felt the same meeting Susan years later at her wedding in Mexico. It is clear your family is one of deep love, faith, and support. I wish that it will guide you during these difficult times. My thoughts are with you and your family during this time.
