Sybil Offen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 25 to Feb. 26, 2023.
Plymouth, MI - The remarkable Sybil Offen passed away February 19. She was born in Harlem, NY in 1936 and came to Detroit in 1939.

Proud feminist and activist for many causes, including civil rights, voting rights, mental health, Detroit Jews for Justice, the Plymouth Democratic Club, Affirmations, and more. Very involved in politics since the 1960s, Sybil was a precinct delegate and worked on the campaigns of Coleman Young (who appointed her to the Human Rights Commission), Dana Nessel, and many others. She was well known in the Michigan Democratic party. Sybil was funny, fearless, and a source of strength and inspiration for many. She told it like it was, like it or not!

Sybil is survived by her sons, Jay Offen (Dr. Leslee Emerson) and Michael Offen (Meryl), her granddogs, Baxter and Micky, and nieces, nephews, cousins, and MANY wonderful friends who were a huge part of Sybil's life.

A Memorial will take place on Thursday, March 2 at 11 AM at the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism of Metro Detroit. 28611 W 12 Mile Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48334 (248) 477-1410. Rabbi Jeffrey Falick will officiate.

It is suggested that those who wish to further honor the memory of Sybil Offen may do so by making a contribution to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society PO Box 772395 Detroit, MI 48277-2395 https://www.lls.org/mi-in or to a charity of your choice.

Sybil welcomed me with open arms to SKK and invited me to GSSG. She broadened my world, encouraged my activism, made me laugh, and comforted me during some really tough times. We had some very deep personal talks. Even near the end of her life she gave me heartfelt words of wisdom and guidance. I will forever treasure my memories of Sybil.

Sybil was a smart, caring woman full of life & love. Our condolences to her family & all who mourn her passing. So many good memories I barely know where to start. Whether she was just chilling out with SKK friends or supporting her favorite candidates & causes, Sybil was always a force of nature. We shall miss her.
