Sybil Marie McCauley Sowell

Graveside services for Sybil Marie McCauley Sowell, 90, of Center, Texas, will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, August 3, at Littles Chapel Church Cemetery in Chireno. The Rev. Bill Taylor, formerly of Littles Chapel Church officiating. Sybil Sowell died Saturday, July 22, 2006, in Westward Trails Manor In Nacogdoches. Born February 14, 1916, in Center, Texas, she was the daughter of Dovie Duck Shofner and Young McCauley. She was a retired retail store owner and operator. Sybil was raised in Shelby County. She was a 1936 graduate of Center High School in Center, Texas. After high school, she attended business school and worked as a legal assistant in Center. She married Clarence Furlow and had one child, Janie Marie Furlow; both are deceased. In 1945 she married Edward Keith Sowell, deceased, and had one son, Edward Kenneth Sowell Sr. of Nacogdoches. Sybil was a devout Christian and lived her life for Christ. She always helped those who needed help, without expectations of reciprocity. She owned many businesses and operated all of them with the belief that all customers and people should be treated with both respect and courtesy. She instilled these basic principals into the fabric of the character of her two children. She was a mentor to many and was a provider to anyone in need. Her favorite saying during hard times was, "Things have a way of working out for the best." She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bubba Myers and Arvin McCauley; sister, Bernice Majorwitz; and grandson, Edward Kenneth Sowell Jr. Surviving are son, Edward Kenneth "E.K." Sowell Sr. of Nacogdoches; sisters, Mavis Pemoller of Des Moines, Ill., and Patsy Myers Cotton of Houston, Texas; daughter-in- law, Sally Campbell Sowell; and granddaughter, Kristen Marie Sowell, both of Nacogdoches; niece, Mary Lee Majorwitz; and nephews, Bo Pemoller and John Allen Towery. The family request that instead of flowers please make a contribution to the SFA Alumni Association for the benefit of Center ISD graduates in the name of Sybil Sowell.
