Thelma Jones Obituary

FLORENCE -- Thelma Irene Chewning Jones died Friday, June 11, 2004, at a local hospital of natural causes.

Mrs. Jones, a beloved teacher at Briggs Elementary School in Florence and other area schools for more than 40 years, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McLaine Chewning of Bishopville. A graduate of Georgia State College for Women, Mrs. Jones was a member of the Teachers' Honor Society, the Anne Herbert Fellowship Circle, and at age 99, the oldest member of Central United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, Edgar Herbert Mackey, and her second husband, Henry E. Jones. She was also predeceased by her sister, Cecile Chewning Watson; and brothers, Charles H. Chewning Sr. and William J. Chewning.

Survivors include nieces, Estelle Chewning Prince of Virginia Beach, Va., Jane Chewning Grove of Hampton, Va., Ann Chewning Utrera of Lanesboro, Mass., Celia Weston of New York City and Alice Watson Revelle of Winston-Salem, N.C.; nephews, Dr. Robert M. Watson of Spartanburg, Charles H. Chewning Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., and Michael L. Chewning of Asheboro, N.C.; and their children.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, June 14, in the Methodist Manor Chapel, officiated by Chaplain Ann Ayres and assisted by The Rev. Boyd Chewning of Orangeburg, first cousin of Mrs. Jones. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the Methodist Manor prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church Building Fund, 225 W. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.
