Carthage

Thomas J. Ablan, Sr., 78, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 18, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Tom was born at his home in "Rock City" in Carthage on August 21, 1938, the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Atala) Ablan. He graduated from Augustinian Academy and Utica College of Syracuse University. Tom was united in marriage to the former Yvonne Graves on June 29, 1974 at St. James Church in Carthage. He spent some time in the US Army, worked as an insurance salesman, and ended his career as a business teacher at Lewis County BOCES. Many might remember him for owning the local grocery store, Super Duper (later Jubilee), with his close friends, Wayne Slye and Ward Bushaw.

Tom is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Graves) Ablan of Carthage, his daughter Amber (Gerard) Marino of Guilderland, his son Thomas (Karlie) Ablan, Jr. of Longview, WA and three young grandsons, Ben and Matthew Marino and Thomas Ablan, III. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, George (Marsha) Ablan of West Carthage, brothers and sisters in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many friends who were like family.

Tom loved to play and watch sports, and enjoyed dabbling in the stock market. He was a lifetime communicant and Eucharistic Minister at St. James Church, former President of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce and former President of the Branaugh Memorial Boys Club (now the Carthage YMCA).

Tom's family appreciates the amazing care he was given through Hospice, especially his primary nurse, Bonnie. The family also wishes to thank the many people who came to help and show support during these last few months.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 21st at 11:00am at St. James Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor officiating, Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Monday from 4-7 pm.

I will miss Tom. He was a good friend and helped me when I was in need. Many fond memories from the days at the House of Dobson and the store. May he rest in peace and my thoughts and prayers go to the Ablan family.

My prayer and thoughts are with all of you. "St. Thomas" as he liked to be called will always be remembered for his love of life, family, and kindness. Tom and I loved to harass each other for all kinds of reasons!! I will miss him.

I send my deepest sympathy to the family of my good friend (who was more like a family member to me) and phone pal. I will miss all of our wonderful talks, laughs, and solutions to the world's problems. I will miss my financial adviser and mentor. Whenever I saw Tom's phone number on my caller ID, I knew that I was in for, at least, an hour of laughter and enjoyment.

My sincere condolences to all the Ablan family. I new Tom for many years. We both played softball for my Dad's team the Carthage Bowl many years ago. He was always happy, smiling and a fine gentleman.

Working for Tom [Wayne and Ward] was a real experience. Tom always had new ideas on how to do an end cap display or move product around. And when I was just sweeping the parking lot, he was always quick with praise, a smile and even a cool drink.
Those of us that worked for him: he gave us all a fair shake and a fair hand.

I am sorry for your loss.

I used to call Tom The Mayor of Rock City, but I'll always remember him as a friend and a good person. I miss the times we had coffee at the old Fox Drug store & the D & J diner. Sleep well Thomas!

I have very fond memories of Mr.Ablan at BOCES during my junior year....we were his first class 8 or 9 crazy high school girls...he treated us with respect as we did him. He would listen to our highschool problems and our hopes and dreams. He continued to push us to be all we could be. He was absolutely hands down the best instructor I have ever had...May you find comfort in knowing your husband, father, grandfather brother and uncle, was one of those persons who made a difference in people's lives... God bless you
