Thomas Chermack Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2023.
Thomas Michael Chermack went home to God peacefully on December 23, 2022 (41 days after losing the love of his life, Ann). Tom was 90 years old.

Tom is survived by his children, Brenda (Andrew) Banchieri; Maura Chermack; Tommy(Jodi) Chermack; his grandchildren: Lauren, Grace, Megan, Kristen, Thomas, and Erin. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joyce Chermak; brother-in-law, John Prindeville; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Tom is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Marie Prindeville Chermack; his parents, George and Susan Chermak; his brothers: George, Bob, Len, Ron, and Gene; and by his sister, Jan.

Tom was born on April 26, 1932 in Swedeland, PA. He was the middle child of seven and was raised during the Great Depression. He served alongside his brother, Len, on the USS Manchester during the Korean War. Tom was a very proud veteran.

After his discharge, Tom settled in California where he became a member of the Irish Piper's Band of San Francisco even though he was 100% Czech. He met Ann at one of the Irish dances in San Francisco and they later married, moved to San Leandro, and raised their family. Tom owned the Mart Barber Shop on Market Street in San Francisco for over 20 years before founding his second business, Chermack Construction Company. Because his children attended St. Felicitas Catholic School, he became a very active member of his parish community. He created games and contests for the parish festivals; he built sets for the school plays; and he was one of the first "Room Dads" in the school's history for his son's class. His volunteer work in schools continued when both of his daughters became teachers and he found himself helping prepare crafts, dressing up as Santa every year, and delivering pizzas to the "Kids of the Month".

Tom will be remembered for his strong Catholic faith; how much love he gave; how selflessly he shared whatever he could to help others; and how consistently he lifted up those around him with a kind word, a funny joke, a song, a dance, or a compliment. He left an impact on every person he met, even strangers (who didn't stay strangers very long because he was so friendly). Most importantly, he will be remembered by his children and grandchildren who never had to question whether he loved them or was proud of them because he made that so obvious!

Visitation will be on Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 5-8pm, with a vigil service at 6 pm at Holy Sepulchre Mortuary (1051 Harder Road, Hayward).

His funeral Mass will be on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Felicitas Church (1662 Manor Blvd., San Leandro).

In lieu of flowers, family and friends are invited to make a donation to the St. Felicitas Chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul.
