Thomas Finnegan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 12, 2017.
Finnegan M.D., Thomas L.

Thomas L. Finnegan, M.D. age 72, a resident of Manitowoc, WI, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017.

Tom was born October 6, 1944 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Newman Central Catholic High School in Sterling, IL with the class of 1962. Tom graduated from Loyola University and University of Illinois College of Medicine. He interned at Valley Medical Center in Fresno, CA where his met Dianne Esaki, his future wife. From 1972 to 1974, Tom served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the final years of the Viet Nam War. The Air Force is where Tom found his lifelong passion for distance running which helped him maintain his flight weight when coupled with his daily diet of 1 hotdog and 2 beers. Afterward, Tom completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Loyola University Medical Center. On August 30, 1975, Tom married Dianne Esaki and shortly after, moved to Manitowoc, WI where he raised his family and served the community for nearly 40 years. He was an avid distance runner and completed more than 50 marathons and 10 ultra-marathons. Tom also enjoyed cycling with his buddies, logging nearly 2000 miles per summer for many years. While a superior athlete, he also had a passion for the arts and loved the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra. He enjoyed his daughters' marathon dance recitals and watching his son skate his heart out playing ice hockey. Tom was a prolific reader and possessed a wealth of knowledge in many areas, especially WWII history and philosophy. He could name any star in the sky but could not figure out how to use the TV remote or manage the most minor home repair. Tom also enjoyed travelling, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include Tom's wife of 41 years, Dianne; three children, Patrick (Shelley) Finnegan, Lyons, CO; Maura (Joel) Rotroff, NYC, NY; and Kerry (Dan) Patterson, San Francisco, CA; five grandchildren, Thomas and Rowan Finnegan, FDR and Oscar Rotroff, and Narumi Patterson; two sisters, Alison (Richard Dennis) Finnegan, Chicago, IL, and Juliet (Alan Engbring) Finnegan, San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Julieta Gabiola, Pacifica, CA; brother-in-law, Dennis (Jan) Esaki, San Mateo, CA; three nephews, Chris Esaki, Brett Esaki, and Sean Finnegan; and two nieces, Kelly Engbring and Micaela Finnegan. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Finnegan Sr and Anne Finnegan and brother, Kevin.

"We weep our loss but find peace that you are finally free of pain. Godspeed, dear man, to the loving arms of your father, mother and brother."

A private memorial service of shared thoughts and memories was held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Tom was my oldest brother, Edward’s best and dearest friend. We shared many times together growing up and in the last few years of my brothers life. He was a very intelligent man and thoroughly enjoyed his company as Ed did. We all miss him!

Tom was everything you desired in a person and a surgeon-colleague and was an easy to get along with man. He served our community well and am proud to have have had him as a colleague here in northeastern Wisconsin.

Tom was my brother, Ed Harms, best friend. I loved Dr. Tom. He grew up with us in Sterling Il. Before my brother Ed passed a couple years prior, we shared many times together visiting brother Ed in "Hotel California" at my brothers home. Tom was a favorite of mine. So opposite of my brother Ed, but so interesting. They shared a life together from a very young age. I knew his brother Kevin in grade school and High school and spent time with Kevin when we both lived in Chicago. My mother and Tom's mother were friends in Sterling Il. Will miss him, like I miss Kevine and his mother Ann.

Tom was a great friend to and graduate of Newman High School. His intellectual curiosity, sense of humor, and appreciation of the arts was a true gift to all he knew. He was also a wonderful example of what it meant to be a good person, a fine son, brother, and friend. Rest in peace, Tom.

To all of you, the Finnegan family. We were so lucky to have him in our lives. Even though I was not fortunate to know him like others. He was my cousin and we did sail and laugh together and I will always remember that. Prayers are with you Dianne and family.

An excellent doctor and a great runner who could run uphill faster than I could run downhill. R.I.P.

What a wonderful obit for a wonderful man.

Tom was--believe it or not--my student at UW Manitowoc. He still remains the only physician ever to enroll in my Bioethics class, and needless to say, was my best student.

He was funny, studious, respectful, curious, and self-effacing, which is remarkable given his professional and athletic accomplishments. When we reconnected recently it was as if the years had just vanished--what a treasure of a man.

Dr. Finnegan had the qualities that an Anesthesia
Provider like myself appreciated--patience. On call case- he would be in the lounge -reading-waiting for Anesthesia and surgery to notify him when they were ready. He always acknowledged other folks and seem to have more than a simple hello to say to them. I can't ever personally recall him raising his voice, even in the OR, which is saying something, especially for a surgeon
Every. year, I would hit him up to purchase a Xmas wreath to support the Appalachian Service Project, I was involved in and he kindly did so even after he retired.
In the mix of our interactions , we would share stories of kids, running, and biking. He certainly had more to add then I on the final two topics.
Glad I had the opportunity to meet you, Tom
Finnegan.
