Thomas Gates

Thomas John Gates, born on June 12, 1970, in Burlington, Vermont, passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2025, in Macon, Georgia, after a long battle with kidney cancer. He was 54 years old.

Tom spent his early years in Palm Beach County, Florida, where his unique perspective and sharp wit made him stand out. Fondly known as "Specterman," after a Japanese superhero cartoon he loved growing up, Tom had a remarkable way of seeing the world. Ironically Tom was more than likely on the "spectrum" although never tested.

In his personal life, Tom found profound happiness with his beloved wife, Cendell Cook. Their nearly five-year marriage was a testament to deep love and companionship. His family also included his mother, Barbara Klingman; sisters, Betty Gates and Barbara Gwinn; brother, George R. Gates Jr.; nieces, Emily and April Gates; and stepsisters, Kelly and Kristin Klingman. He was also surrounded by many cherished friends who were fortunate to know him.

Tom had a knack for keeping things in order-often using humor and sarcasm to remind others of the importance of propriety. His love for music, animals, puzzles, and science fiction brought him endless joy. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and cared deeply for those around him.

His devotion to family extended to his beloved pets, reflecting his compassionate spirit. In honor of his love for animals, the family encourages donations to the ASPCA in his name.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to Heartland Hospice of Macon for their unwavering support during Tom's journey, as well as Piedmont Macon Hospital and Fairhaven Funeral Home for their compassionate care.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on or around June 12, 2025, with details to be announced. His memory will live on in the stories shared by those who loved him.
