Thomas Honan Obituary

Thomas R. Honan

Thomas Raymond "Tom" Honan's full, rich life came to an end on June 13th. He passed away at his home on Clyde Hill, in the presence of caring family.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Palmyra "Tinky" Honan, his children Kathy, Tom and Gretchen, step children Jeanne, Tricia and Dianne as well as sons -and -daughters in-law and seven grandchildren.

Tom was born in Benson, Saskatchewan Canada on April 27, 1916. In his early youth the family moved to Tacoma, Washington where Tom grew to manhood.

Tom joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1934. He rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and while stationed in Guam in 1941, he became a prisoner of war and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner in Zentsuji, Japan. His indomitable spirit and optimistic nature helped him to survive that experience.

He returned to his family in Tacoma in 1945. Once home, he met Lorraine Berg who soon became his wife. The couple had three children and lived in Los Angeles, California. Tom had a successful career with Sears, moving through a series of increasingly responsible management positions. Sailing and skiing were prominent activities and remained so throughout most of Tom's life.

After retirement and the untimely death of his wife, Tom returned to the Pacific Northwest to the home he carved out of the wooded coast of Olele Point on the Olympic Peninsula. Not long after the move, Tom was introduced to Tinky Woods. The couple was happily married for 26 years. Together they enjoyed an extended circle of family, friends and neighbors. As a dear friend described him, Tom was a force of nature, a very positive force.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Northwest Harvest Food Bank.

Tom was always my favorite uncle growing up. He introduced me to sushi, and taught me to appreciate Japanese culture. Which I really think is the highest tribute I can give him. I even enjoyed it when he used me as cheap labor when he was building the house at Olele Point.
