MARKHAM, Thomas Richard
July 9, 1930 - January 16, 2016
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Tom's passing. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Laura and his elder brother Ron. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Diane; daughters Nancy, Vicki (Jim), and Terry; stepchildren Leslie (Bill) and David (Cathy); and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers David (Lynn) and Dennis (Ada) and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Vancouver Police Department for 10 years and retired from B.C. Hydro in 1993. Tom had many passions which included an avid interest in bridge where he participated in many tournaments, music, ballroom dancing, and sports fishing. He made us all smile with his many work and fish stories. He also enjoyed his many winters in California. We are proud to say that Tom has donated his body to the UBC for anatomical study. No funeral by request.

Tom and my dad, Lachie, were long-time friends who shared a lot of stories. I'm sure many of them I never heard, but I do remember dad telling me the story of when he and Tom went out fishing in Horseshoe Bay. The boat caught on fire. Dad dove in the water and called to poor Tom who was frantically trying to put out the fire in the boat "Tom. Save yourself!" The captain abandoned ship and both castaways swam to shore where they were rescued later in the day.

I do appreciate that Tom, his wife, daughters Teri and Vicki made it out to dad's wake in 2015. I'm sure dad would've been very happy too.

All the best to you Tom. I'll raise a tipple to you and your buddy Lachie on the weekend!
