I was greatly saddened to learn of Tim's death. His sense of humor and his great love of sports will be greatly missed.
Tim was the only reporter that treated a fledgling women's rugby team with dignity and respect. He remembered our names and made us feel as though we were doing something special.
May the universe bless you, Tim.

Although I'm a native Chicagoan, I've been living in LALA land since 1990. I'm shocked and saddened to learn about the death of Tim Weigal. When I lived in Chicago, I always looked forward to his good-humored sports report on Channel 7.
The weird thing is that the reason I was browsing through legacy.com was to sign the guest book for my closest friend in Chicago, Joe Zucker, who also died from a brain tumor in early April. He was also first diagnosed about a year ago. Like Tim, Joe was known for his great sense of humor and ability to make other people laugh--the true legacy of both these men is the number of lives they touched with their humor and caring. I will miss them both.

To the Weigel Family and Tim's "News Family" ~
I fondly remember reading Mr. Weigel's sports reports in the "Chicago Daily News" years ago. He added zest and energy to the Chicago sports scene and a great sense of humor via his "Weigel's Weiners." Helped us to laugh more than cry with our Chicago sports teams!
He will be missed by so many. May God comfort you at this difficult time. Peace and all good.

As mentioned by my mom in this guest book, Tim had invited us to spend the afternoon with him at WLS TV to see the life of a sports reporter. I was only eight or nine years old at the time but can still vividly remember the day. He took me for a tour, showed me where he gets his information, introduced me to all the news anchors (like Fahey Flynn and Joel Daily). He truly made me feel like that afternoon was just for me.
Looking back, it couldn't have been too big a thrill for him. After all, I was so in awe of the entire environment and situation, I don't think I said more than 10 words the entire time. Still, he acted as though he was just as excited to have me there.
What my mom didn't mention was the fact that I ran into Tim 10 years later at the Chicago Auto Show. I had waited in line to get his autograph. Midway through signing his picture, he stopped, looked up at me and said "Aren't you Ty Barton, the Bears' next great Tight End?" I was amazed. Not only had he remembered my name, but had remembered the few words that I had spoken that afternoon a decade ago!
Thanks, Tim, for making an ordinary kid feel so special. We'll miss you!

Tim was a Chicago original who enriched the lives of everyone who knew him, in addition to the millions of viewers who enjoyed him on television.
A professional journalist in every sense, Tim was no brown-nosing cow-tow-er to the players, management, and owners (as many Chicago sportscasters are); he reported the facts and wasn't afraid to speak his mind. He delivered it all, on the level. In doing so, he gained the respect and admiration of both the sports figures he covered and the fans that turned to him for the facts. You were the Real Deal, Tim, and Chicago is a better place for having you. May your family find comfort, and may you rest in peace.

I will always remember Tim's smile and his weigel weinners and I will always remember how nice he was in person when he used to come to the Multiplex for the Bulls back when they used to practice there. I was very saddened to hear about Tim Weigel's passing. I did have one encounter with Weigel when I was at a Cubs-Expos game in 1976. Batting practice had just finished and I was heading back to my seat, and when I looked up I saw Mr. Weigel, and said, "Hey that's Tim Weigel" and he smiled and patted me on the head and walked toward the press box. I have been away from Chicago for 10 years, but when I went up there for vacation I always made it a point to watch Weigel's tremendous sportscasts and reports. He made sportscasting fun and he certainly was one of many who inspired me to get into broadcasting. His professionality and his spirit will never be forgotten by his family, friends, peers and fans. God Love ya, Tim

Tim was a "character" in the most positive sense of the word. He seemed to embrace life and realized there were no "do-overs", that life was for living. Even during his recent struggles, he appeared to remain fond of all life had to offer. People like Tim come along far too infrequently.

Sincere condolences to Tim's Family. He was one of the best and brightest. We grew up together in sports and I can still see him joining the Big Ten Skywriter's tour as a rookie in 1971. He was fun to be with then and never changed.
My last memory of him was walking down a near North street in the spring of 1998. He saw me driving by in a car with my two sons and yelled, "Hi Mike!" I'd been living out-of-state for 9 years and hadn't seen him during that time, but he recognized me and went out of his way to greet me.
Rest in Peace My Friend!

I grew up with Tim and his "often-imitated, never-duplicated" Weigel Wieners. One can pretty say that about Tim's style and demeanor on the air.
One thing you can say about Tim is that he was fan of the teams he covered. I think that is what endeared him to Chicago.
It seems that Chicago's sports scene is a little bit duller than it was just a week ago.
You will be missed. May God bless your soul and your family.

Chicago sports will seem more like a business without Tim Weigel. He brought an honesty and a warmth that reflected the fan within, much like Harry Caray did. We've lost another true Chicagoan that deserved the joy of the Cub championship, and I'll toast one for Tim when that happy day occurs.

I grew up in the Chicago Area, watching Tim on TV for as long as I can remember. When he switched from WLS to WBBM, so did I. While he was on, I instructed my wife not to "talk during Tim." I was an avid viewer. He had fun with what he was doing, and his sense of fun was infectous. In that, he was unique. I never met the man, never knew him outside his TV persona. When he stopped appearing on the 10 pm news and "Face 2 Face" I stopped watching those programs as well. Chicago won't be the same without Tim, who was as much a "Chicago legend" to me as Gene Siskel, Mike Royko, and the rest were to him. My best wishes to his family and to the rest of Chicago for our loss. I'll miss him.

I sit here alone, thinking of the man I will miss. His wide grin, infectious laugh, and his marvelous humor. Heaven will never be the same with Tim there. He will probably go to God and say, "Hey God, how about a Cubs-Sox World Series? Wouldn't that be a great miracle? C'mon God, I'll give you a beret, how about a tie, I know - a neon jacket!" Only one person could pull that off, and that person is Tim Weigel! I'll miss him! Condolences to the Weigel family. But you know that Tim will be waiting for you up there with arms wide open!

I'll never forget the column that Tim wrote in the Sun-Times after he received his pink-slip from Channel 7 back in December 1994.Rather than feel sorry for himself or use his public forum to complain about getting a raw deal, Tim used the opportunity to share a leason that he had learned from his painful experience. He said that in the past he had not given much thought about the feelings of an athelete or coach who had been fired by his team. Tim just fealt that "it goes with the territory." That was until it happened to him. Tim then vowed to never let such a job severance go by without a sympathetic, compassionate or encouraging word on his part. Fortunately I have never been unemployed, but after reading Tim's column I think that I have become more sensitive to the emotional and financial plight of those who have lost a job for whatever reason. He used his unfortunate experience to learn a valuable lesson of life and then he eloquently shared it with his readers.
Whether it was getting fired from a job or learning that he had terminal brain cancer, Tim accepted adversity with the ultimate in class and character. He can be an inspiration to us all.
Thank you, Tim, for being a role model for me.

...."only the good die young"...
I have been away from Chicago for a little over 2 years. I'm watching the Cubs game on WGN last Sunday, when all of a sudden I see a moment of silence for Tim. My heart jumped out of my body! I didn't even know he was ailing.
I never met him, but enjoyed him so much for all the years I watched him because of his smile and wit. He never seemed to take things too seriously. He always seemed to keep a nice humor to his broadcasts.
Reading the Guest Book entries, I really wish I could have met him. The fact that he took the time to reply to people that wished him well at such a hard time in his life. What a guy!
My heart goes out to his family.

Tim and I grew up together, going through 1st - 8th grades as class mates, friends, and teammates. He called me "Larry the laugh", a name his father, John, probably was responsible for. He taught me to love baseball and the White Sox as we watched games together in his Gageslake home. He was always the best at everything--the best athlete, the best student, the best musician, the best with the girls...there was no competing with Tim. You had to just stand back and admire him. A few years ago, we got a chance to talk when I called him during a guest appearance on the SCR 1160 radio program. We laughed about our childhood and how we threw away thousands of dollars of baseball cards while using them on our bicycle tires. I just talked to his dad a few weeks ago. Ironically, his dad has had to see his son pass away, the son he so admired and almost worshiped. Tim had that signature laugh in first grade when I made a mistake reading out loud in Miss MacCay's classroom. We'll miss that laugh now Chicagoland-wide.

I just can't believe Tim is really gone. I'll never forget how supportive he was when I left WMAQ news in disgust over the whole Springer thing. Most people gave me a token "you go girl"-type sentiment, but Tim was really there for me. He told me that integrity was never for sale, and that if you are selling something, it's probably not integrity, because that's not for sale, or something like that...no, he said I had integrity, and because of that, nobody could ever buy me. That's it. Well, Tim, ditto for you, a hundred times over. This whole town loves you and we all miss you. And even though nobody could ever buy you, I wish I could buy a Weigel Wiener right about now, because I could use a good laugh to hold back these tears. God Bless.

I met Tim many years ago at a restaurant called Edinburgh Castle (no longer in existence as a restaurant) on North Broadway...he was always upbeat and friendly when he came in for dinner. Tim and I became friends in the mid-1970's and have kept in touch over the years. He was the most humble and unpretentious man I have ever known. We were having dinner at a popular Chicago restraunt and the waiting line was quite long. The host recognized Tim and offered to seat us before the others, but Tim wouldn't hear of it and said we would wait our turn like all the others.
I will miss you, Tim. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Tim's family.

The city lost a great man. It seems just like yesterday Tim and I were at a fund raiser arguing over the name of the weatherman that got busted by the IRS. He said it was Tillman, I said it was Avalos. As always, Tim was right.
People used to laugh at us because of the names we called eachother. I called him "nut hugger" he called me "the prison bitch."

Twenty-one years ago, Tim did a kindness for my 12 yr old son re sports and visits to station. It was a cold day, but my son grabbed my hand and said he'd never forget it. Now 33 yrs. old and still never forgot it. Posters followed even in college. We followed Tim, searched for him when he made changes to another station because he made sports fun - down to earth person. We wish his wife, and all his children and family our prayers for their loss and also ours. My son Ty - now in TX couldn't believe it when I called. I'm sure Tim is doing some Weigel Weiners up there and bringing joy even up in heaven. Wonder what colorful outfit he's wearing!!!! He had real class and those that did work with him lost a GEM. God be with all of you and yours.

I was never a sports fan, but I was a white-shoes Weigel fan. His laugh, his sense of humor, his crazy sports coat made him seem like a fun guy.
I never met Tim, but I felt as though I knew him. And, I will surely miss him.

The city has certainly lost a shining star. It seems like just yesterday when Tim was in our backyard, dressed like a clown, performing magic tricks like "the never ending wiener," and the disapearing, and re-appearing, and disapearing...wiener."
I'll never forget the time he bitch-slapped Giangreco across the face with his large (rubber) wiener durring the chicago Emmy awards.
What a class act. May you be dressed in heaven half as well as you were on the set.
