Tomas Garreton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 14, 2012.
Garreton, Tomas Rafael 25 Oct. 18, 1986 Sept. 03, 2012 Tomas Rafael Garreton came rushing into this world on Oct. 18, 1986. He was born in Ames, Iowa, where his parents lived at the time. He was a cheerful and happy baby who grew into a mischievous boy that constantly pushed against the limits imposed on him and regularly challenged the status quo. From the time he was a small child, he was acutely aware of the inequalities and injustices in the world and tried to right wrongs wherever he could. Music was one of his greatest joys and he was a talented musician, proficient on drums, banjo, and mandolin-- his favorite instrument. He was the lead singer/songwriter for his band, Profane Sass at the time of his death, and his band mates and fellow traveling musicians, are all mourning his loss. Tomas loved to travel and spent lots of time living on the streets of Mexico, Canada and Guatemala. He wrote and sang in both Spanish and English and the lyrics of his songs often referred to the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the incarcerated. He led a purposeful life, without money or material possessions, believing that the typical first-world lifestyle was unsustainable. He hitchhiked, rode freight trains and walked for transportation. He rarely sat still, never watched TV and believed that people should always stay focused on the important things in life such as family, staying positive, making people happy and finding ways to make the world a better place. Tomas died on Sept. 3, 2012, while riding a freight train in Philadelphia on his way to the band's next concert venue. Fellow riders describe seeing a bright light and suddenly Tomas was gone. Currently, traveling musicians and friends from all over the world are gathering in Hillsboro to pay their respects to his memory. Tomas is survived by his brother and fellow band mate, Nico Garreton; his baby sister, Isabel Sofia Garreton, who he always described as his one true love; his broken-hearted mother, Toni Rock Garreton; his maternal grandmother, Sharon K. Sherwood; and his father, Tomas E. Garreton; as well as various cousins, aunts, uncles and adopted family far and wide who Tomas described as his "tribe." His dog, Lona, acquired in Mexico when she was a pup, is also lost without him. Tomas lived the life he chose and loved the life he lived. His philosophy of life can be seen in these verses from a circle poem he wrote in one of his journals: Witness something amazing in a journey without fear. In a path illuminated by light and pure love. Love the ones you meet and of course you will meet the ones you love already. Witness true magic and use it wisely. Take time to see, hear, taste, touch and remember to take the time to put everything aside and meditate, pray, give thanks and never take anything for granted. A celebration of his life is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the Helvetia area at 21309 NW Phillips Rd in Hillsboro. People who are interested in his music can access it through the band's Facebook page: Profane Sass or through Soundcloud.com. There are also dozens of videos on Youtube under his name, under Soulfire Project or under Profane Sass. A Memorial Fund has been established at US Bank In his name: Tomas Rafael Garreton Acct# 153665335318

We met back in 2008 in Mazatlán, Mexico during a carnival while I was studying Marine Biology in college. I still remember the wonderful and sweet person you were, our long conversations, and your incredible musical talent.

Recently, while listening to music on Spotify, I randomly came across a song called "No Train." I thought, "I recognize that voice from somewhere"-and indeed, it was you. I remembered your rendition of "Los Abandonados" and immediately searched for more information about you, which led me to the heartbreaking news of your passing.

I enlisted in the army in 2012, and our paths went in different directions. But know this: you will always have a special place in my heart. Your legacy and your music will live on forever.

I send you a hug all the way to heaven.

With sincere affection,

Your forever big friend,
Lieutenant of the Mexican Army
Henry Rdgz.

tomas was a partner of mine when we met in my home country (canada) in winnipeg.. i was going east, he was going south. what was supposed to be passing through town, turned out to be 2 and a half amazing weeks on a farm, absorbing eachothers lives and sharing laughter and love... tomas mattered to anyone who cared to spend even a moment in his presence. such a strong, loving, uplifting energy... i have a feeling years later, we will all still have such strong memories spent with this beautiful soul..

I had the honor to work with Tomas's mother, Toni a remarkable woman who raised a talented son. Tomas's life touched many and his time on this earth was too short.

Because i feel like lingering with the other lingerers in your memory, here's this. I'm going to have to be a bigger person than I've ever been in my life to carry on without you. you left something powerful in me. I couldn't make music for one whole day after you flew away, the next time I performed my voice had changed and grew and I managed to get my words out in french and your words in spanish. I owe it to the universe to bring you wherever I go.

Tho I vaguely remember you coming to the house, I do remember. What impacted me the most is how much you meant to my daughter, Yvonne, and how her heart broke to hear of your passing. God Speed. There is a HEAVEN and we will see you there. EAS

I am very sorry for your loss. My daughter was friends with your son - she adored him. She is also a musician and hops freight trains like Tomas. I feel your pain. Know, that as parents we can only hope and pray that our children stay safe. We can do no more.

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. Our deepest condolences are with you as you grieve.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during this difficult time. May your loving memories of Tomas help bring you peace. While he was only given 25 short years, the years were full of love and passion. It's been a while since we've seen Tomas, but he was always a pleasure to be around. Love you!

I knew Tomas, in fact, my brother and I were just talking about how he gave the best hugs in the universe. He really was an amazing person who more people should act like. He was never judgmental, always helping people and one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I am shocked he left us so early and he will be sorely missed.

These words describe Tomas perfectly ... he was soooooooooooooooooo special to sooooooooooooooo many people ... Kiwi (my daughter) shared his music and really understood his messages to the world through his singing. I, too, understand his messages and appreciate them ... my mind and heart have been opened up even wider because of Tomas. Open your wings and sing so all can here, Tomas.

Funny, smart, charming, wise, and so intuitive. He taught us to love beyond what we saw, and continues to inspire us to be better than we find ourselves. I miss him now and will always.

Toni,
I remember him as one of the little "Campbell Soup Kids" that you sometimes brought to meetings. What a fine young man he grew up to be. I wish I could have known him and that he could have been in this world longer. My thoughts are with you and your family during this sad time.
