1922 – 2018
After a long and fulfilling life Tony Chochla passed away 28 April 2018 shortly after his 96th birthday. Tony was the eldest child of John and Sophie (Maczimchuk). He was born in Bereska, Poland on 14 April 1922. In 1928, Tony, his brother John and his parents immigrated to Canada and settled in Ghost River, Ontario. Educated in a log cabin school Tony moved to Fort William to attend Vocational School. He worked as a motor winder and electrician at Mahon Electric until his retirement in 1987. Tony and Frances Shapton were married in Wesley Church 3 July 1948. Together they built a home at 721 Mortimer Street, where they raised their family in a close-knit neighbourhood. They enjoyed a loving marriage of 67 years until her passing in 2015. Summers were happily spent at their camp at Arrow Lake, a family gathering place. Tony loved the outdoors and the Arrow Lake area was his playground. He enjoyed fishing with friends and family in the area lakes and hunting in the surrounding hills. Later his outdoor passion was photography. Tony was a lifelong member of the Fort William Curling Club and reluctantly retired his broom at age 93. Tony will be greatly missed by his brother Mike Chochla, his children: Mark (Donna); Morris (Janice); Louise, Glen (Lauren) and seven grandchildren: Dylan, Samantha, Jacquelyn, James, Sophie, Ella and Annie. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to thank Dr. H. McLean and the staff at Sister Leila Greco for their compassionate care of Tony. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made on Tony's behalf to the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice. A reception for friends and relatives will be held at the Airlane Hotel, Madrid Room, on Saturday 12 May from 2pm to 4 pm.

Tony was just the most lovely and remarkable person. Mom and I met him and Frances on a `seniors tour` of the UK back in 1991. Tony and I were constantly holding up the bus because we were chasing Scottish bulls around the meadows trying to get that perfect photo. He was completely fearless I might add. We had stayed in touch over the years and I was always so delighted to get his Christmas letters - which always were so beautifully written and sounded like poetry to me. We supported each other through our losses and shared our love of nature and animals. I am only recently aware of his passing and while it is a loss for us all, I can only imagine that Tony is finding new adventures in the great beyond - with his beloved Frances by his side.
