Walter V. Kucynda, 88, of the Residence at Hilltop, formerly of Charleroi, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 in Mon Valley Hospital Inc. He was born Dec. 12, 1917 in Charleroi, a son of the late Harry and Ella Yaros Kucynda. He was a graduate of Charleroi High School and retired from Corning Glass after 38 years of service. Mr. Kucynda was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific and Asian theatres, earning three Bronze Stars. He was a member of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of Charleroi, the Charleroi American Legion, Loyal Order of Shell Backs, and Corning Retirees. He is survived by one aunt, Martha Yaros, and sons Pete and Dr. John Yaros; six sisters-in-law, Anne, Dorothy, Gloria and Trudy Kuzemka, Helen Lelekacs, and Julia Hendrick and husband John; nieces and nephews, Joanne Elkowich, Paul Zolak, the Very Rev. Paul Kucynda, Charlotte Markovich, Nicholas Kuzemka, Charles Zolak, Nancy Muzzy, Marian Largent, Kathy Fester, Barbara Baker, Karen Larson, Karey Kuzemka, Debra Boehm and Mark Kuzemka. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Kucynda, on Dec. 7, 2000; daughter Diane Ella Kucynda, on Jan. 26, 1996; and brothers, Joseph, William and Theodore Kucynda. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., 825 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, where a Parastas Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Funeral Services will be held Monday, Oct. 2 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home and at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Orthodox Church with the Rev. Gregory Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Monongahela Cemetery. For those unable to attend, on-line condolences will be accepted at the funeral home Web site, www.melenyzerfuneralhomes.com
