Wayne Atkinson Obituary

Wayne S. Atkinson, 83, a fifty-one year resident of Winfield, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Central DuPage Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was born to Wilma & Roy Atkinson on July 10, 1926. He grew up in Minnesota and joined the Army Air Corps during WWII. When he was discharged in the fall of 1946, he enrolled in radio and television announcer school. After graduation, he worked at several radio and television stations across the south. He worked for WLS-ABC-TV 7 Chicago for thirty-four years. He was a long-standing member of the DuPage Art League, Illinois Watercolor Society (signature member), and International Society of Marine Painters (signature member). Another of his passions was karate and through the years, he rose to the Master rank of 5th Degree Black Belt. He married Barbara Peterson in Braham, MN on June 10, 1949. They had three children, Kim, Scott and Gregg. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children, Kim (Keith Holm), Scott (Vickie), Gregg (Janis); grandchildren, Kendal & Lindsay Holm, Ashley, Alex and Jacob Atkinson, Rebecca and Mekena Atkinson; and his brother Dale (Shirley) Atkinson of Brooklyn Park, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Clinton Atkinson and Jean Corrigan. Visitation Sunday, September 27th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton (1 block east of Naperville Rd.) Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Central Dupage Hospital, Winfield, IL 60190
