Wesley Mattila

Mattila, Wesley 79, of Ely and Benson, AZ, passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at the Tucson Medical Center. He was born on July 25, 1931 to Waino and Charlotte Mattila in Duluth, MN. Wes was employed for many years as supervisor of maintenance at the Ely Public Schools. He served four years with the U.S. Navy. Wes also was a member of the Ely Lions International organization for many years. He was married to E. Blanche (Niemi) for 53 yrs. They resided in Blaine, MN before moving to Ely to Blanche's childhood home. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Blanche and one half-sister. Wes is survived by sons, Dan Mattila of Ham Lake, MN, Dale (Connie) of Mora, MN and Alaska, and daughters, Arla Jean Fredrickson of Virginia, MN and Vicky Hanson of Finland, MN. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Sara (David) Olesgaard of Fargo, ND, Lindsey Mattila, Jacob (Kathy) Mattila of Alaska, Lucas Mattila, Angie Fredrickson of White Bear Lake, Katie Mattila of Alaska, Kristie Mattila of Mora, MN, Jennifer Janeksala (Brett), Taryn (Jim) Spear and Nickolas Hanson. Four great-granchildren, one half-sister and an aunt, Esther Barber of Duluth numerous cousins, and many friends who will all miss him sadly. A memorial service will be held in July. Family arrangements have been entrusted to the Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.
