William Broder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 1, 2024.
William Keidan Broder (April 1, 1931-March 21, 2024)

Bill was born an April Fool in 1931 and, perhaps as a result, regarded the world with a light-heartedness, warmth, and sense of humor that buoyed everyone he encountered -- from friendships he maintained for more than eighty-seven years to the random stranger he encountered on his daily hikes on his beloved Marin Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, Broder lettered in football, basketball, wrestling, and tennis at Cranbrook School, graduated from Columbia College in three years, and then served as an Officer in the Navy on a Destroyer in the South Pacific during the Korean War. Upon his return, he met the love of his life, Gloria, and the two were married until her death in 2013. Together, they attended graduate school at Stanford where Bill wrote and taught writing as a Teaching Assistant under Wallace Stegner and Richard Scowcroft. The newlyweds fell in love with California and settled in a rickety house nestled in the hills of Sausalito with a magnificent view of the San Francisco Bay. Professionally, Broder specialized in the writing, design, and production of educational materials for museums, schools, exhibitions, and publishing companies, eventually partnering with James Robertson to create The Amazing Life Games Company, which designed and produced early-learning and mathematics materials for teachers. Broder had several novels published and in 2011 launched The Ainslie Street Project as an archive for all of his works. Though most of his peers have passed, the outpouring of love his family has received from those who remain is a testament to his wisdom, kindness, and generosity of spirit. He is survived by two children, a son-in-law, a grandson, and his granddog, Pencil, who adored him.

Being 12 years older than I, Bill was my canary in the cage, telling me at my 60th birthday party that the coming decade was the adolescence of old age. The 70s, he said, if you´re lucky, are ok, but things start to pop up and, well by the 80s, you´re truly old. Somehow he was never really old. A few months before his death, he entertained me in his living room. We talked of books of course and life. He was so alive as he always will be in my memory.

I just heard about this and I am so very sorry! Bill was kind and tender and light-hearted and enthusiastic and so smart--a great reader who introduced me to wonderful poets and supported me in my own writing, as did his Gloria. I will miss Bill forever. I hope there will be a memorial of some sort--if there is, I would like to join the mob--because it will be mobbed.

Bill was a dear friend. He enriched the lives of all his friends and all the people in his community. He was a great supporter of the environment. We loved walking with him in the Marin Headlands, savoring the beautiful landscape, the marine mammals and birds, and Bill's incredible mind.

It's true, Bill Broder bubbled up when you met him, he was so full of life and uplifted spirit. I was lucky enough to be part of the Amazing Life Games team back in those days before "computer games". Bill's "The Sacred Hoop" is one of the best books anyone could want to read.

Bill had the kindest soul, and the most intelligent mind. We all benefited from his thoughtfulness, and will miss him always.
