William GROVES Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Mar. 16, 2015.
GROVES, Dr. William Douglas PhD
December 5, 1937 - March 6, 2015
At the "ripe" old age of 77 Bill was advised that he would have to go to a nursing home. Although his brilliant mind was still preciously evident he lamented only being capable of watching tv reruns of Howdy Doody now due to advancing dementia. But he was not about to do this with a bunch of "old" people. True to his unique way of handling life he managed his departure by shutting down systems one by one following complications from hip surgery. Left stunned by his wilfully having accomplished this feat, his daughter Caitlin and her mom Lana Groves sat with him as he took his last breath mere days after discussions about his "re-homing". They stared at his stillness, 'no longer Billness,' in disbelief. The nurses had to confirm that he really had pulled it off. He was gone. In the words of his niece, it was "Bill's last great escape". There will never be another like him. He was hilarious and exasperating but so entertaining that he could insult you with such precision and wit that you just had to smile. He was a kind gentle soul who loved science, nature, people and gold. He worked for many years as a chemical and geological engineer and when he wasn't off in mining camps he was reading physics books and writing great fiction and poetry. He played guitar and had a great sonorous singing voice. Bill was predeceased by his parents Tom and Betty Groves and his son Andrew Moran. He is survived by his daughters Marianne (Jean), Susannah (Shawn) and Caitlin (Gord) and his brother David (Anne). He also leaves behind grandsons Andrew, Michael, Lucien and Gaston, and nieces and nephews Kathy, Janet, Chris and Kevin. Cremation will be taking place. There will be a private gathering with family.

You would have loved your new granddaughter. She has some of your features and I am sure she will be as funny and smart.

I want to extend my deepest condolences to all of Bill's family, particularly to his brother, David.

To David:

Bill was the strongest thread in the fabric of your personal history.

You were children together; you were teenagers together; you were young adults together; you were middle-aged men together and finally ... old men together.

The two of you shared all the trials and tribulations of growing up in the era you did. You had your ups and downs; your agreements and disagreements, but never once was the bond of brotherhood threatened. Your love for your brother was unconditional, as was his for you.

Believe me when I say, I sympathise with you deeply for the pain you must now be feeling.

Another great man has passed. Another great library has burned to the ground. I knew Bill for years and spent hours in conversation finding him an extraordinary intellect, an insightful Engineer, and a hell of a wit.

Very saddened to learn today of Bill's passing. For decades, Bill was like a member of the Brett family mining business, joining us on many adventures. Bill and I are pictured here circa 1979, rather soggy and tuckered out after a long day thrashing through the bush in search of gold on Table Mountain near Cassiar, BC. We will miss his razor wit and kind heart.

What a guy, everyone he met felt very comfortable. He had a way that he could talk about and be genuinely interested in any thing that came up in conversation. I see much of him in "tiny bear" and she keep that spirit in her heart. This guy, was really one of a kind. The gentlest soul I knew. Memories of some vacations and sitting on the beach and watching the tide stay with me. Rest in peace Dear Bill, you will be missed. I am certain you are holding court somewhere in the universe and captured the attention and admiration of those who have left this earth. Condolences to Lana and Caitlin, and Bill other family.
