John Peck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2011.
(John) David Peck David Peck, longtime proprietor of Posse East, and its predecessor, the Posse West, passed away June 8, 2011. He was 64 years old, and had operated businesses around The University of Texas at Austin for over 40 years. A native of Houston, born February 6, 1947, Peck came to Austin in the mid 1960s to pursue Chemical Engineering and Business degrees in the Plan II Honors Program. In 1968, armed with a vision and a $1400 loan, Peck turned the recently closed Rio Grande Gas Station (located at 24th and Rio Grande) into "Posse Drive-Thru Beverages" - the first enterprise of its kind near UT Campus. As West campus began to grow, Peck expanded the drive-thru business into one of the most successful West campus bar and restaurants of the 1970s-80s - The Posse West, which he operated until 1983. He used the Posse West concept to create its cross campus sibling, the Posse East, in 1971. David served as a friend, mentor, coach, and confidante to several generations of employees and customers. He had many varied interests and was a true self-made man and entrepreneur. He loved traveling in his sailboat around Lake Travis and the Caribbean, where he never met a stranger. He believed in helping people, offering them a great place they could go that provided them good food and good service, and making them feel at home. His quick wit, wisdom, and his benevolent nature endeared him to many dear friends who grieve his passing. Indeed, they are his family. If asked, many would speak of a quiet conversation resulting in a small loan to complete that semester's tuition, or some help to make that month's rent or pay groceries. Others would speak of advice they received, or a phone call made on their behalf, or a job reference made when one was needed. David never, it seems, could say "no." This generosity extended to everyone, as he opened the doors of the Posse East on many holidays offering free food to all, and especially those without family. His pride and joy was "The Posse," the ever-popular home of award-winning hamburgers, pit- cher beer, and Longhorn Spirit, which has long been familiar territory to University of Texas engineers, law students, members of the Longhorn Band, and game day fans. The Posse recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, an occasion marked by a huge reunion of former staff and customers who all came to visit with Peck and recall fond memories of times spent there. Though ill, he was able to see them all, a memory that will be treasured by those he leaves behind. David was preceded in death by his parents, John Edmond Peck and Louie Will Sims; his stepmother, Myrel Nelson Peck; and his beloved cousin, Michael Drew Elliott. He is survived by cousins Patrick Royal Elliott of Brenham, Karen Dawn Elliott Smith of Henderson, Janell Elliott Ross of Austin, and from the Houston area stepsisters Maggie Calzada, Shirley Garza, Freda McClelland, Dolly Walker, and stepbrothers Lamar and Patrick Nelson. David left behind a lifelong set of friends who will carry on his legacy. He was a selfless man whose joy came from serving others, through food, drink, and camaraderie. He will truly be missed. Please celebrate his life and wish him well in his place of rest.

My memory of David is ancient: he took me to our Charles H. Milby High School prom in 1965. What I want everyone to know is that he was a true Texas gentleman, even in his youth! Wish I had "kept up" with David throughout the years; glad to be assured that his character only grew to be more golden. Until we meet again, you will be remembered by many, including the Reverend Sharon D. Horne.

Its so true, David was a selfless person always willing to help someone out and provide. I will never forget sailing with him and Kenny, Ricard Avila, Phil Farrington and the rest of the sick mates. You will be missed and thanks for all the PBR's!

Cheers!

What a great loss to so many people. David you were one of a kind.
Always giving always sharing. You gave your home in Spicewood so freely and let us keep the boat there and go whenever we wanted. I enjoyed so much working at the posse with you. You will be missed alot but are in a better place. Prayers are with your family and friends at this time. John and Cheri Morgan

Although I haven't kept up with David since I left Austin in 1969, I was saddened to hear of his passing. David and I went to high school together as well as UT from '65-'69, when I left for California. I was probably one of the first (unofficial-no W-9's and all cash minimum wage or lower in those days)employees of "The Posse" right after it opened.
I was not surprised to read of all the lives that David touched so positively. My heart goes out to his close friends and loved ones.

David, You were my first true love. We dated for five years, then went our separate ways. Sounds like you lived a life that was yours, shared it with others and never used that hideous Calculus course you had to take at UT for your engineering degree. Good for you!

Rest in peace,

Randy C.

David, I am sooooo sorry to hear of your passing. Haven't seen you since a long-ago high school reunion but well-remember you and your parents living behind me when we were small and what a great fellow you turned out to be. R.I.P. to a great and missed man

David was a good friend. I was one of his bartenders while I was going to U.T. in '74-'75.

Childhood memories… Your Mom hoped you would marry one of the Speights girls but you were our “brother”. All the square dances at Charleston Park and dances above the fire station were happy times. We all grew up and moved away but those memories will always be in my heart.

How many games of 42 or Moon did we play at the Posse East? About as many pitchers of beer! David was a true class act and the Posse won't be the same without him.

Many of the business principles that I adhere to at my restaurant, I learned from David. I will never forget his easy manner and smiling face.

David, you will truly be missed. You are a true folk hero in this Austin community, highlighted by your Posse East. I frequented Posse East in 1971 back when it was called Prufrock. My first date with my wife (38 years of marriage this month)was in David's bar (a classy choice, of course!). David had a way of making it all friendly and looking easy. David had and has many great staff who worked with him for many years...he must have been doing something right! We'll miss you man, and thank you for the many great times we had because of you.
