Dr. William Wesley Harmon
1941-2017
Dr. William Wesley Harmon, the first of five children born to Willie and Evelyn Harmon, was born on May 26, 1941 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 due to cardiovascular complications.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C., a master's degree from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J. and a PhD from Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS.
Dr. Harmon served as President of Houston Community College- Central Campus from 2005 until his retirement in December, 2016. Prior to relocating to Houston in 2005 with his wife, Beverly, Dr. Harmon served as Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for 10 years. He was the first African American to hold this position. Living in the University's Academical Village (a.k.a. I am so sorry to learn of Bill's passing. He was my colleague and friend during the years we worked together at the University of Virginia and we accomplished much together. Bill was always dignified, insightful, and a lot of fun. Rest in peace, thy good and faithful servant. Dolly Prenzel, Nashville
