Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2025.

William (Jim) James McCoy, a long-time resident of Richmond VA, passed away on July 6, 2025 at the age of 90 with his son and daughter by his side. Jim was born December 27, 1934, in Glendale WV to Walter and Mary McCoy of Sistersville WV. He graduated from Sistersville High School in 1952 and from Denison University in 1956 with a degree in Economics. Jim began a working career with Texaco before entering the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant as part of the ROTC program in March 1957. He was promoted to First Lieutenant during his 3 years of active duty and was stationed in Delaware, Florida, and Turkey. He then resumed working with Texaco which led to assignments in Alexandria VA, Honduras, Belize and Jamaica in sales & marketing. Returning to the U.S., Jim purchased an oil company in Monterey VA and then purchased Thompson Oil Company in Louisa VA, before becoming a founding partner of Tanks, Trucks & Trailers Inc. in Richmond in 1994 where he served as President. Jim was a world traveler and loved anything to do with transportation, particularly trucks and trains. Jim and his cousin John Martin had fun riding their railroad speedster, and he enjoyed striking up conversations with strangers wherever he went.

Jim is preceded in death by his loving partner Lottie Sacks, and survived by his daughter Cynthia McCoy (Thomas Oastler) of Atlanta GA, son Scott McCoy (Susan) and their children Megan and Matthew McCoy all living in Midlothian VA. He is also survived by his sister Sarah Wells (Leonard) of Versailles KY and their daughters and families.

A memorial service and celebration of life for family and friends will be held in his beloved Sistersville WV once all arrangements are made. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) or to the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org) in honor of William J. McCoy.
