WILLIAM KING Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 4 to Sep. 5, 2014.
KING, William A. "Bill" Died August 28, 18 days short of his 83rd birthday. Bill was born in New York City. He graduated from Dartmouth College, cum laude, in 1953 and from Harvard Law School in 1956. He practiced corporate and business law - with the Boston firm of Haussermann, Davidson and Shattuck - and was a partner at Peabody, Brown, Rowley and Storey (now Peabody Nixon). He enjoyed mentoring the new associates. In 1988 Bill became Vice Chairman of Heritage Travel. Thomas Cook Travel entered into a general partnership with Crimson Travel and Heritage Travel and Bill became Vice President and General Counsel to Thomas Cook Travel USA. Bill was President and Executive Director of New England Forestry Foundation. Its Education Center was dedicated to him. In 2001 he was instrumental in negotiating with the Pingree family a conservation easement on 760,000 acres of land in Maine; the largest conservation easement in U.S. history. In 1999 he became one of two founding directors of the New Horizons Project, bringing young Russian graduate students to the U.S. to better understand entrepreneurship, management, ethics and volunteering. He loved travelling to Russia in all seasons and meeting the students in some of the less well known cities. While at Dartmouth, Bill especially enjoyed his times with the Dartmouth Outing Club where he continued to be a member. He served on the Council and was President of the Appalachian Mountain Club of which he was a Life Member. He was instrumental in preventing an Interstate Highway from being built through Franconia Notch in the early 1970's and was also active in protecting Crawford Notch from development. In 1970 Bill and his family moved to Lincoln, MA where they lived for 38 years. Bill served on the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional School Committee. Continuing his interest in conservation, he was a member of the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust and the Rural Land Foundation of Lincoln. He was a member of the First Parish in Lincoln. In the warmer weather he could be found in his big vegetable garden and pruning the raspberries. He was an avid birder since childhood and often identified the birds by their songs. In 1978 the family bought a town house in the Village of Loon Mountain, NH. Bill was on the Board of the Loon Village Homeowners Association. Bill loved New Hampshire and spent so many good times with family - skiing, hiking and relaxing at Loon. Together the family shared wonderful trips around the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Australia. One memorable trip was to Zermatt when we skied down into Italy for lunch. Bill and Liz enjoyed many trips together to many parts of the world, often hiking and skiing. In 2008 Bill and Liz moved to Kendal, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Hanover, NH. Bill served on its Council, was on the Events Committee and the Gifts and Bequests Committee. He enjoyed the cultural events in the Upper Valley, the sports at Dartmouth and the Osher at Dartmouth classes. And he especially enjoyed Kendal's Shakespeare Group. The move to Hanover was like "coming home" for Bill. Last year he and Liz celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Bill's family includes Liz; Cynthia, Lon, Lyle and Eleanor of Concord, NH; Brooks, Alice, Adrian, and Amelia of Wayland, MA; Ginger, Jay, Brady and Callie of New Paltz, NY. Also, Carol Commette of Mantoloking, NJ; David Fitzpatrick of Sun City West, AZ and several cousins. And his dog Gus. Bill coped very well for a number of years with neuropathy. He died from complications of a stroke. The family thanks everyone who has been so kind and helpful at Kendal, especially the Staff in the Health Center and Clinic, the Activities Staff and the Therapy Staff. I am very sad to learn of Bill's recent passing. He was a mentor to me when I first came to Peabody Brown as an associate in the mid seventies, displaying the highest craftsmanship in the practice of law but always with humor and good cheer. I became his partner in 1980, and benefitted and learned from his vision of a law partnership as a business, a profession and a family. We were also neighbors in Lincoln, MA, where his kids babysat for ours and we “enjoyed” early morning commutes to the office for meetings of the firm hiring committee.

With his love of family and the outdoors, his service on numerous committees and boards, his many interests and his always positive and contagious regard for others, he was a great contributor who deserved more time in life.

Bill was a wonderful mentor, partner and friend to me. He was my mentor when I joined Peabody, Brown, Rowley & Storey, and taught me many helpful lessons, both about legal practice and about people. (Bill was a great student of people.) Bill could always be counted on to support his family, friends, clients and colleagues. He and I spent immense amounts of time together working in the same department and on the same projects. We even shared some time at Loon, and had a chance to watch each other's children growing up. I feel very fortunate that I had a relaxed and lengthy telephone conversation with Bill a few days before his stroke. He was in good spirits and we enjoyed catching up on each other's families and mutual friends and reliving a few experiences from yesteryear. In fact, we discussed a plan for me to visit Bill in New Hampshire, and I regret that I will not be able to do so. Bill was so popular at PBRS that Dick Morningstar, one of our partners, (when the firm was still relatively small and informal) led the business department in a beatification of Bill (in spite of his being still alive). Much evidence was introduced of his beneficent and holy qualities, including purported miracles. We were not able to find anyone to act as "Devil's Advocate", but the process was otherwise complete. (I was in charge of the Gregorian Chant.) Dick even introduced a tape recording of Bill's Saint Bernard barking attestation to how Bill and Liz carried the dog to Loon every week on a giant foam mattress since the Saint Bernard suffered from arthritis. Thereafter, we frequently referred to Bill as "Saint Bill" or "Saint WAK" (for his initials). Putting aside memories of all the fun we had with Bill, the most enduring memory is of his strong personal characteristics such as his kindness, sincerity, integrity and positive attitude. It was fun to know Bill and to work with him. I will miss him.
